i have an 86 m1008 cucv (k30). The things got almost bald highway tires that are worn unevenly. Sometimes when im driving down the road and hit a bump i start getting this massive wobble from the front end, as i slow down it goes away until it dissapears completly and when i speed back up its fine again, until i hit another bump. I just had her inspected and the mechanic check the whole front end and said its fine and mentioned the tires. Is this possible?

sounds like worn kingpin bushings and springs on a dana 60.

or death wobble. get 2 bushings/2 springs/2 washers for springs. and swap them out.its fixed almost 98% of the ones i play with with out changing kingpins.

thay sag out over time and i have measured at most just over 1/4" of sag from new to old on springs. and if bushing has no grease groves in it on the taper side its worn also.

check these guys out for good prices and service. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZnowpartsQQfrppZ50QQfsopZ2QQfsooZ2QQrdZ0

What are kingpin bushings? I looked at my leaves and i dont think they are too worn or are sagging. Im hoping its the tires and i should be replacing those soon. If not, i guess this may be the issue. Im hoping its not, the mechanic said the front end looked really good. If not can someone explain to this poor newb what the kingpin bushings are and what they do, id like to try to do it myself, im pretty mechanically inclined. I hope its not the leaves because i wanted to wait to put in a lift spring

I also had the same thing happen to my Blazer with the 44 front. I replaced the steering stabilizer shock with the dual cause i had it layin around and it stopped. :dunno:

Just another thought to look at i guess

okay i think i did some research, gonna go look at it. Looks like a little spring encased in this metal box? What does it do? and how hard is it to replace them? I mean i dont know much but i got good mechanical skill, any tricks i gotta know?

I'd just fix the tires first. Don't mess with the other stuff till you get rid of the tires you already know are bad.

stabilizer= band aid

something is worn out of spec, and you just reduced it.

okay so i did even more research on kingpins and DW and i believe i know whats going on, but i have a few questions:

If my fronts are worn unevenly, can i rotate them to the back and would that help at all? Why would the front tires wear unevenly?

If i need to put washers in the kingpins, is it as easy i just unbolting the cap, putting them in and rebolting the cap on?

I really dont wanna spend the money on taking it in to a shop or having the tires balanced/aligned because im getting 33s soon and i dont wanna spend the money twice. Thanks

to change the king pin springs, place jack under axle, one wheel at a time. remove 4 bolts holding cap on. remove and replace with new springs and bushing. install four bolts, let jack down.

your tires are worn from the tires being mis aligned due to the worn springs.

yes, you could put the front tires on the back, then they will wear unevenly untill you replace the king pin springs/ bushings.

thanks, i doubt its the tires now because it would prob wobble all the time. Ill look for springs and bushings on ebay, replace them then rotate and see if it works. Thanks for letting me know its that easy. I dont wanna mess up my new tires. Do you think ill have to throw washers in there or should i be fine with the new springs and bushings?

just bought upper bushings, springs, gasket and the upper spring retainer. Gonna rebuild the upper kingpin when i get the parts and its not frigid out, i guess ill see where we go from there

i would just use 1 washer for now. if you put 2 in with new springs, it may be too much preload.
