Just looked up the heads on my 454 today-

14092360...86-90...oval...OPEN...454 Truck, "peanut" round ports

So what does all this mean? The oval port, open chamber part I think I understand...But what does "peanut ports" mean? Are these good heads or so-so heads? I realize they aren't performance/hotrod heads, but I'd still like to know what I've got. :)
 
the peanut heads are the red headed stepchild of bbc heads.

i wouldnt intentionally seek them out, but if i had them in good shape id run them. just make sure you have an intake specifically for the peanut heads. most marine engines run them for low rpm torque. peanut ports are smaller even than oval ports, and would be fine for your tow rig.
 
Those heads are ok for torque, aint gonna have much power over 4500 though. Heads are divided into Rectangle, Oval, and peanut, peanut are basically just small ovals. Like, really small ovals. They are about half the size of my 049s (ovals) after I did a little porting on my 049s.
 
The "peanut port" heads are very low RPM range heads.
They came in some T/D motors for truck applications and in C/K/R/V trucks too. They give a BBC a power band similar to a diesel engine . Lots of low end grunt but at the exspense of any kind of power over 3,800 RPM's ( actually these heads fall off a little before 3,800 RPM's ).
These heads are great for towing and motor home applications but not much else . I am not saying that they are a bad design but I am saying that they were meant for a specific RPM range and not much else.

the peanuts are very, very common in the marine industry.. see them quite a bit...

for a low rpm trail rig, they'd be decent i suppose...
 
peanut port heads are perfect for a low end torque engine, they don't make any HP but torque is what you're after anyways.

Anyways, the truck is a dd with a 465 trans....No speed shifting goin on, so hp isn't really gonna do me much good.


So, since I have these heads, What should I be lookin at as far as cam specs?
 
Comp cams makes a retro-fit (or not) hyd roller cam that has 206*/212* duration. The same cam (although not retrofit) is used on sallee chevrolet's extreme4x4 454 engine making over 400 ft/lb at somthing like 1300 rpms. that engine uses a late model block (gen 6 i believe), 4 bolt main. i don know what you have but those numbers look pretty good to me. heres i link i hope it works http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/frame.html?/ChevyBigBlockV8s/454_xtreme_4x4.html

It does happen to be a 4 bolt. :D It actually started out as the Goodwrench 454. Same as what Sallee started with except mine is Gen 4.

I would think that that cam, along with an Edelbrock 2161 manifold and an Edelbrock Q-jet would make a good torquey motor. Thoughts?
 
yep, the high lift/low duration of that cam looks good to me.

may have to check valvesprings and or piston/valve clearance, just to be sure.
