So lets beat a dead horse. Nv4500 or 4l80

I would say NV4500 is better for towing, but a manual trans can be scary for off roading because on a long steep hill if you miss a gear...kiss your but goodbye!

Well that shows how much I know about the 6.2/6.5 engines. I was not aware that it has a wastegated turbo. While having a quick spool housing and a wastegate, I still would go auto if it's an all around truck. If it's going to be towing highway mostly, it's a tough call. 4500 is pretty good in that sense.

I always lean toward a manual trans. however, the NV4500 has its share of issues as well. Tough call. I hate electronics that are required to get you home. Doesn't seem the electronics have kept up with the durability of hard parts...

NV4500 would be my choice.

EDIT:

on a side note, my NV4500 got me home from moab UT. with no clutch pedal to speak of.

So my wife just killed that already dead equine.

4l80 it is.

Seeing as this truck may serve as her future daily driver while we save for a newer car.

I almost thought she was gonna go with the 4500. On the bright side she actually had to think about it lol

Little late since your wife made your choice, but I'd go with the 4500 because I like shifting gears.

That said the 6.5 is happy with either trans behind it. The stock gm turbo spools crazy fast, down side it hinders top end power and has really high back pressure to drive it. There are a few options for better turbos though. The hx35, hx40 and A-team turbo seem to be the best and most popular options.

Glad to see she's engaged in the decision process and happy with the results. :thumb:

Here is a side thought, what happens if you are looking at the same swap, but with a manual shift 4l80 instead. I don't want to cut out my perfectly good harness, and since I have been getting away with a mildly modified engine on my current computer, I'm afraid the computer required to run the 80e wouldn't cooperate.

4l80. It's too hard to talk on the phone, drink your Dew and shift at the same time. You have been called out as the clumsiest person around already today.
Not gonna argue this point....happy birthday Sasquatch!

Mostly so that any idiot can drive them.

I don't think many owner/operators buy them.

My Pete has the 6 speed Allison, and every year that goes by we see more and more auto equipped trucks. I know of one auto tranny failure in the 4 years I've been here. In that time we've had more than a few clutch jobs needed. My buddy in BC just had his truck retired, 15 year old commercial garbage truck, 500,000 city miles...on a 5 speed Allison. The only thing they ever did to that tranny was fluid and filter. Trust me, we torture trannies...yet I'd never even consider a manual.

BTW, both my buddy and myself are lease operators.

Personal car or truck...I prefer stick.

@454Sub

I would never do manual valve body 4l80. They shift very hard. Think most aggressive shift kit you've ever ridden in and then multiply that.

Aren't you mostly seeing stop-and-go driving, though? I'd think clutching that would get to be a pain.

That is not an over the road truck either.

It's all stop and go.

It's all stop and go.

That was my point. If you're doing all stop and go, that's quite different than OTR driving. Pretty sure that's what Martin is getting at, too. For your application, I understand why you wouldn't want to be clutching all the time.

The point I was saying was that automatics have become reliable enough that they are now being used in commercial applications. They have come along way in the last few years. They may or may not be as reliable as a manual (that would be a never ending debate I think), but it has certainly improved. Maybe even enough that with a well built transmission it would be a non-issue.
