So my mechanic has a Cummins BT6 sitting out back...

I think a better choice would be a 4BT Cummins out of a "P" series Bread truck...a four cylinder one had enough power to pull a huge box van full of weight(with the areodynamics of a brick!)..and last over 200,000 miles.. another plus is they came factory in chevy trucks (the "P" series) and will bolt to the same mounts as a gas V8,and have adapters to use a TH400 tranny, practically a bolt in swap--and much lighter than the 6BT version, and though not nearly as powerful, its still more than adequate, and will give better fuel economy than a 6 cylinder would...and no cobbing dodge parts into your GM truck ...

What kind of mileage would I be looking at in a Blazer with a 4bt?? My truck weighs around 6000lbs, and the non-turbo pushes 68hp, so I'd guess that the turbo'd version pushes around 90-100hp, and lot's of torque. If I can't expect around 20-25mpg with no load, then it would really be a worthless swap for me. My 356 is already getting 15-16mpg... and I know that a V8 diesel can get 22-25mpg in a blazer, but I have no idea what the 4 cylinder should get.

With the proper gearing for the 4bt's torque curve you should be able to get the numbers you are wanting. They are very efficient engines and with turbo they are at 105 hp/265 torque. There are also marine versions that are 250 hp stock, so there is alot of potential to create hp and keep it efficient.

High 20's and up..

You might search the "Diesel" forum for more info....one member has a M715 military jeep with a cummins 4BT that gets between 25-32 mpg!.( I saw it for sale on here I think!)..I cant spell or remember his name--someone here must know!...

He' currently selling that M715 on e-bay... you guys should check it out... and watch his video pulling out a bronco and jeep together... the bronco gets stuck trying to remove the heep... then comes the M715 with his 265ft lbs of torque, straps them up together and proceeds to tow them all the way around the mud pit... while the bronco is blatantly fighting back... when he stops, the bronco pulls him back about 2 feet, the guy opens the door and it says "Ford Recovery Team" on the side... I was rolling...

You should be able to get at least 25mpg as long as it's geared correctly with an OD transmission. 20+ should be able to be had with a 6BT and OD tranny. Heck, I get 20mpg on the highway in my 2001 24v Dodge and I weigh 6,850lbs, and have an automatic OD tranny. A manual should bump it up 1 or 2.

Would the D60 need to be built? or would stock hold it fine?
For one I don't even know what could be done to a D60 to actually INCREASE it's weight capacity.

I'm positive a stock GM D60 with kingpins will hold it up easily. Dodge used the same front axle under their 1st gen Cummins trucks from 89-93. Heck, those King pin 60's should be able to hold more weight than my ball joint 60 under my 2001 Dodge Cummins and lots of guys have big heavy steel bumpers and winches to boot.

I should just take the 401cid out of my dads tractor. It is only about 70 horse. But considering the engin wouldn't fit into the engin compartment without moveing the fire wall back about a foot and gaining atleased a foot from crossmember to hood. Did I mention that it is only 70 horse. And it is an inline 6 :D
