So, not doing the Cummins 6BT - but rather a 454TBI

Hi all,

Its been a while since I have been on; just have a lot of stuff going on. Plus the 'burb is hanging in there. No issues to report. It was VERY nice to have wicked cold A/C while towing this summer!

At this time, I was hoping to start preparing to do my Cummins 6BT swap but its just not in the cards. Just too much modifications and alterations to do in such a short amount of time. So as that door closed, another one opened ... I will soon have a Gen V 454 TBI out of a '91 C1500 SS. Getting the complete motor, along with brackets and the TBI. That truck owner is doing an LS1 swap and through an intermediate friend, the engine is mine.

This conversion has been done quite a number of times by lots of other folks and I have started to read up on various posts. As of right now, it looks like the only thing I will need to change over to is headers and a PROM chip for the ECM (or get the existing re-programmed). I am stoked that this will be a much easier swap to do!

The motor will be here in the next week or so. It will be torn into probably around early December to confirm that the internals are in good shape - and the very least get new gaskets, valve stems and freeze plugs - along with a new oil & water pumps. I am hoping the bearings and rings are OK - but I am prepared to change those as well.

The deal I made with the wife is that the truck won't be off the road for too long, as we're heading into great camping weather. I will post updates as we move along ...

Nice score! I used some Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers on my 454TBI swap into my 88 Burb, they fit nice, no leaks either. I bought a good used set to help keep the cost in line. I went through more than a few chips trying to get the truck to behave well. Believe it or not, the stock 5.7 chip seemed to give the best results in that rig. I am using the EBL system on my current swap.

I was reading that some folks have had good luck with no computer mods - all they did was getting the fuel delivered in the proper manner to keep the beast going. So maybe my approach should be try it no mods to the PROM and go from there.
I am not familiar with the EBL system, so I will mark that on my list of items to review. Thanks Greg for the note!

Still waiting on the donor 454 to arrive. I am hoping to get it & in by March. If not, then it will be next Winter's project ...

Why would you remove the 454 from a 454 SS???

Works out well for you I guess.

Not totally sure - I think the jist of the backstory is the guy wants to do an LS1. But, yes - works out for well for me :cool1: !
454 runs just fine, but I am going to tear into it just to make sure. Rings, bearings, freeze plugs will definitely be in order.

Any updates yet?

...If it were me, I'd put on some sort of multi port injection...like this

throw a TPI harness, sensors, injectors on it and go wild!!

No, and unfortunately it looks like it's going to be next winters project. I made a deal with the wife that I wouldn't mess with the truck during prime camping weather. I am hoping however that I get the engine somewhat relatively soon so I can start tearing into it - so come late fall it will be already.

However ..... there is a '93 2500 4x4 suburban (with a bad engine) that is for sale locally for around $1,000. He says everything with the truck works, just the engine is bad. I am strongly considering possibly getting that truck and put the 454 in it ... and keeping BigBlue the way it is.

I asked the gent for a picture of the RPO codes - I am curious to what this truck came with. I love ex Gov't trucks.

I'm curious as to the "Bio-Chem Warfare Paint" he's claiming it has. CARC is common on military trucks, but it would be oddball for a municipal rig.
It's also possible he has no idea what he's talking about. :dunno:

He just sent over the VIN and I pulled the RPOs. It was definitely a Gov't vehicle (GAM), but I think you are right - it was for a municipality of sorts. Maybe for Forestry as Josh stated?

But it's got hydroboosted brakes (JD7), GVW RATING 8, 600 LBS (C6P) , 4.10 gears (GT5) and the original color isn't too off from this crazy ass paint job (EXTERIOR COLOR,PRIMARY,DARK BLUE GREEN MET (39U) ). It also came with rear air (C69)- and a skid plate (NZZ); we'll see if both of those are still present ... Sounds like a great foundation for sure.

I am going to try to go see it over this weekend.

It would be about time someone bought that rig, it has been on Craig's list the two years I've lived here :rotfl:

You wanna go with me on Saturday? We can grab lunch or something before hand. We can see what John is up to as well.
I don't think I will buy it on Saturday, but maybe I will if I get a wild-hair. I guess I should double check the length of my trailer.

So...talk him down on the price? :dunno:

Indeed
