The kind of things I used to get into, 8K would not get me out with a straight pull. But, there are things you can do.
I know a guy where I hunt in the swamp that had a 1500# superwinch on the front of his small Toyota pickup.
1/4 inch cable and all.
He carried some chains and snatch blocks, and always seemed to get out.
Remember the winch is rated for the first wrap on the spool. Every additional layer takes away from the pull.
I use 3/8 inch steel core cable, and make sure my winch is big enough that it will break it with a full spool.
But, I have been known to go in bad places.......
The downside of snatch blocks and chains, is that it takes a lot longer and a lot more work to get out.
But, the upside is that it usually beats walking out, and the more cable you have out the stronger the winch is.
For a first time winch owner, it would be nice if it was strong enough to do the job by itsself, since its real easy to get discouraged when having to make many short pulls.
However, a too small winch with snatch blocks beats no winch everytime, so........
