Silverado is getting sold. Now keeping the CUCV and driving it to AR. It'll be the wife and three dogs, the kid getting flown down. Not driving 2300 miles with him in the back again

So I'm trying to come up with all the small things I should do before the trip. I'm sure it'll make it there w/o a problem, but it's a long drive, at times with nothing and nobody for miles and miles, and no cell service.

I'm going to get a new distributor, since the last small trip I took the ignition module gave up on me, and the rest of it is still 30 something years old, plus IIRC it doesn't advance past 20 degrees, no matter what.

Still have temp light on, still don't think it overheats, (sending unit) but I dunno. Might change out my Tstat to 180 for the trip.

Oil change of course

Also gunna check my dif fluid, since I haven't done that since owning it

It's loud, so I'm going to fill the holes in the cab with bolts (threaded holes in cab for misc stuff), lay down a big blanket, and all the stuff we're bringing will help muffle. 3 days is a long time for all the noise

Also need to find a spare, wish this came with the tire carrier brackets.

Of course the obvious, check fluids, leaks, tire pressure, etc.

Maybe I should paste an itinerary on here so I know the closest member in case of a break down :haha:

Wish it had cruise control

Nothing much to add, and not knowing your route it may not mean much, but if you end up in trouble in Oklahoma send me a message.

When are you leaving? I have an inside spare tire mount that's taking up room in my garage. I won't be home for a week but I'd send it to you for shipping if it helps.

We're shooting for monday night or tuesday morning.

I forget the exact route, as the wife has drove this 10-15 times, and she has her specific stops. But the jist of it is South to Portland, east to Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and into Arkansas.

And if we decide to visit our buddies parents, it'll change going to North Platte Nebraska, then Missouri, Arkansas.

Maybe I shoulda posted this in the lounge, it really was supposed to be a technical question about prepping the CUCV for the trip. :D

I am a little ways away from you in Idaho but if you have any problems at all you can call me. My Mom and Dad live in Oakley ( you will be close to there). I know folks in Boise too.

I will pm you my phone number. I have a complete 6.2 sitting in my garage that if you get in a bind I can rob parts off of.

Feel a whole lot better now, though today started a bit rough. Put in a new Tstat, changed oil, replaced my passenger headlight. Went to go pull nom nom out of the garage, wouldn't start :eek1:

Had spark, carb has been wet, and exhaust has been rich. Decided I don't have time for this, so scouted CL for used carbs. Found a guy who rebuilds Qjets. $200 for a professionally rebuilt carb! This guy is just about 60, been doing it all his life, even have a shop for 16 years in the area, and does it on the side now.

Slapped it on, fire right up, not even a bunch of cranking to fill the bowl, right up. PLUS, considering a cold engine, and no choke. It came with a hot air choke, and I had a I guess heat riser style. The type that's bolted to the intake. Idles great, runs better, no fumes. Does diesel for a second after shut down, but I'm assuming I'm advanced a bit. I switch from mannifold back to ported. So I'll take care of that tonight.

Going to grab from speakers, cig lighter tonight, put that in, then watch season premire of walking dead :waytogo: then finish working.

Out of wa. East on 84 in OR. :waytogo:

No power on the freeway. Pushing the pedal more does nothing. I just get to my speed and stay there. When a hill comes, I just slow down like a semi.

And averaging 10mpg

Sounds like the secondaries aren't opening. I'd check that. Maybe dizzy not advancing correctly if you changed out that. Hope you make it. Sounds like its still running ok.

Those have been my two thoughts for a month. But now, new carb, new distributor.

Revs beautifully parked. On the road, its like nothing happens after part throttle.

But on another note, in pendleton, OR. Doing fine, but about to start climbing big hills.

Blazer doesn't have one. Getting hairy. Trans doesn't like me very much. Shifting into 2nd up the big hills, doing 35-40 at times.

Somewhere a bit north of caldwell, I'D.

How much tension does it take to open the secondary air valve (top butterflies) with your finger (engine off)?

I always set mine as loose as possible, while making sure they still closed solidly. Never seemed to have a problem with that setting. From the factory they were normally set pretty tight, I assume in an effort to keep the MPG reasonable. If set too tight, they would never open. Since the secondaries won't open in neutral/park (no engine load) it makes sense it would rev fine like that.

MPG sounds a bit low, but I couldn't figure out your gears. 3.08's and 33's? I would think at least 14-15MPG freeway if kept around 60MPH with that combo, I assume the speedometer has been corrected for the gears/tires?

Secondaries open fairly easily. 31's and 3.08 now. We were up to just below 12mpg one our last fill ups.

About 60 miles till twin falls. I forgot how much I hated this drive. And that was with an 06 KIA optimal with 28mpg and cruise.

yikes

You MIGHT try loosening the secondaries up a bit, it should take almost no pressure to get them to open.

Unfortunately there are so many variables in these carbs, pretty hard to do roadside adjustments on a trip. About all you can do quickly and easily is the choke, idle, and air valve adjustments. Most of the internal adjustments wouldn't significantly affect WOT IMO.

You've verified that the secondary throttle plates (lowers) are opening when the engine is warm? Haven't messed with these things for awhile, but as I recall, if the choke isn't completely disengaged (or it's stuck) the lock on the secondary throttle shaft will prevent them from opening.

I wish I would have tried driving one of my vehicles with the secondaries tied shut just to see what it felt like.

When I put the carbon on, I adjusted idle speed and mixture. Did timing as well. Idled niceley, drove smoothley, nice off throttle, acceleration. Till I romp on it, and freeway speeds. Dunno if its carb side or ignition side.

Secondaries can open, do they?
Choke fully opens, lockout does release.

And to update. Well be close to Evanston, WY shortly. Gunna decide then if we will crash there for the night.
