So...theoretical SM465 swap into a 6.2L/TH400 equipped truck

Would give me an excuse to put a tilt column in...maybe even properly working wipers...gasp...even intermittent wipers!:thinking:


I'm sure we'll talk more in the future.

I like the idea of having a parts truck there just so I can at least say, "well, it came out like this, so it's gotta go in like this."

However not having a whole truck sitting somewhere while I do the swap would be good.

My understanding is that you just need the flywheel and clutch assembly, ideally a hydraulic clutch assembly. These can be purchased new or junkyard (well, I doubt you want a junkyard clutch disc, but you get the idea). To my knowledge, as long as you get a 465 with a 32-spline output to match the 208 (these aren't uncommon), it's entirely a bolt-in affair.

Edit- My understanding is that the clutch, and thus removal of the fluid coupling between the engine and wheels, gives the 6.2 a new lease on life.

Russell, it's a 1984-86ish TH400 bolted to a NP208...whatever the CUCV's got basically.

well, i just figured everyone else had ya covered. :D i disagree with rene - the worst part of the swap is putting the hole in the right place in the floor for the clutch pedal rod... :doah:

It'll be my first major drivetrain swap so the whole thing will likely be the worst part. I'll get over it.

Here's my quick recommendations on swapping it out.

If you have a removable trans. tunnel (don't know if the trucks do), use a cherry picker! Get the transmission under the truck and then drop some rope around the trans/tcase adapter and use the picker to lift it into place. A 465/205 combo has a nearly equal weight distribution, so it should hang nearly level like that. Then you can use the picker to lift it to the proper height and it will have enough swing to push it forward so you can get the input shaft through the clutch. Makes the whole process pretty easy.

If you don't have a removable trans hump, you might be able to use ratchet straps through the cab and under the frame - i've seen a couple people recommend that. seems like it will limit front/back movement tho.

When trying to get the input shaft though the clutch, put the trans and t-case in gear and rotate one of the outputs slowly while pushing the trans toward the engine. Sometimes this process is a SERIOUS pain in the ass, other times it's not. The first time I installed the trans, this process took all of a couple minutes. The second time it took me well over a 1/2 hour trying to get it lined up.

With my truck, even if the trans tunnel isn't removable (I don't believe it is) I wouldn't have a problem cutting a hole for the cherry picker and then welding it back together. Like in my S-10, when I cut two holes to get to the top two bolts on the trans easier when I was rebuilding it every year.
 
I have actually helped do a 465/205 swap before. Them's some heavy bastards. However it was 7+ years ago and I did mostly dumb muscle work.

Trying to remember if my buddy's pickup had a removable tunnel or if he just cut it...
 
it wouldn't be ideal, but you could probably run a chain through your shifter hole to make it work with a cherry picker. that would give you some constant forward pull on the trans which might be a pain at times and helpful at other times. i would definitely use chain in this case tho, as you know the metal edge you cut for the shifter will be sharp!
 
I am looking at doing this swap. What does tall & short Transfer case adpater mean? Also will a 205 round Adapter work with the 208?

Tall/Short is referring to the length of the mounting point measured from the centerline of the transmission output.

The 205 round adapter could be used if it is the same dimension from mounting surface to mounting surface as the NP208 version, but the 205 adapter can be sold for way more than it would cost to buy the NP208 adapter.
 
So How do I find out which one I need In my Blazer? I am wanting to use the NP208 off of my Turbo 400 on the SM465

And it won't work for the 465.
I have a couple of 205 adapters off a 465 and I was told they should work on a 208 but now I am told they do not.
This week end I am trying, I have both a 205 and 208.
 
Well i've been converting my '85 m1009 to a sm465 over a couple hours every evening all week and thought i'd throw my 2cents in.
I got a steering column,hydro clutch pedal assembly,hydro bellhousing,6.2 flywheel and clutch,(which was just put in before the truck died), off a dead '86 6.2 2wd c30 cab and chassis truck.It seems that people with 2wd parts trucks around here don't think there is anything of value on them but those with 4wd think they are made of gold.The owner commented he was keeping the trans,(which I had no use for anyway),but said I could have the above parts because he didn't want any of that 'worthless hydraulic clutch junk'.....I didn't argue:whistle:.

After a couple weeks of perusing the classifieds and craigslist I found a 4wd sm465 about 1.5 hours away for $200.The kid who owned it said it came out of a '76 or '82.He said the truck was built from a couple trucks,they had scrapped it but kept the trans for a future project but dad wanted the junk out of the garage.I was happy upon arriving to discover it was an '85+ with hydrobell,'w' crossmember,and np208 still attached.:D

So far all is going well.The pedals and column went in with no issues....look like the truck came that way.The shifter location is clearly marked on the tunnel,cut it right out.Locating the clutch master cyl location wasn't too hard.The 465/208 setup is the same length as the turbo400/208 setup,so no driveshaft issues.The bellhousing clears the 24 volt starter.Hopefully tomorrow i'll wrestle the trans up there after work and get this thing back on the road this weekend.........future reports to follow...
 
Well after sitting dead for 15 months it lives again!Getting the hydro clutch bled was a pita but everything else was pretty straightforward.It looks factory and I like it much better than the th400.About the only thing I would do diffrently would be to find a removable trans tunnel beforehand.It would have made getting the trans in much easier.For some reason the fuel gauge now reads way past full and the backup lights aren't working but i'm sure i'll figure that stuff out.
