Jus wondering if a MSD 6A box would help or be benefical to my truck. Truck runs fine, but always looking to have it run cleaner, better, etc.

Here is my mods

1984 K5:

305cid w/123000

700r

Motor stock except the following:

heddman headers, dual exhaust, catco cats and flowmaster muffs.

Holley 650 street avenger modified with cross over tube

4" K&N open element air filter

Mallor dist.

MSD 6a will help a bit. Give you a little more power low to midrange. Better idle. If you are still using the stock coil I would change it to MSD or other performance coil.

I had a non-GM domestic vehicle with the factory electronic ignition on it's warm, but not hot V8. I wired a 6A to plug in and replace the factory module. Seemed like it did help with cold idle (non-choke Carter AFB) and maybe a little with drivability.

About a year and half later that car stranded me on the hwy. In trying to diagnose the problem I put the factory ignition module back on. That didn't solve the problem, but the 6A never got re-installed and to tell the truth I couldn't tell the difference. That engine ran in the RPM where the MSD is supposed to be the most beneficial.

I suspect that if you have a stable, well functioning, & reliable ignition system now that putting an MSD on it is a waste of money. If you don't have such a system (points, early electronics, some aftermarket), then an MSD will get you there. Only reason I can see to add one to an HEI would be if you're exceeding the RPM limit (where the dwell angle starts to fall off) of the factory module.

Ah thanks. My truck never sees above 4k and that is on a good day. I jus putt around in my truck, so no high RPMs. I think ill save my money/time for something else than. On to the next project................
