i have a couple of broken rocker studs and need any help on reputable shops and some price estimations from you guys. i am in oceanside so the closer the better thanks

Is there any portion of the thread stud left? If so i can tell you how to remove the remaining piece and what part number of stud to use to replace the bad one.

the studs snapped right below the nut so there is an inch or so left on both

That is easy to remove the rest of the broken stud then. First start by draining the radiator as the studs protrude into the water jacket. Next stack a bunch of washers on the stud until you can get a nut to thread onto the stud with good thread engagement (at least the full depth of the nut) make sure you oil the nut to reduce friction. Now start tightening the nut and it will draw the stud out of the head. You might need to stop at some point and remove the nut and add more washers then continue as before. Once the stud is out i would blow the hole clean with air and then get ready to install a new Dorman #693-005 stud (this is a .003" oversized stud and you're supposed to use a proper reamer to ream the hole but don't worry about that). Now is where it gets tricky, you need to drive that new stud into the head without damaging the threads (use a couple of nuts threaded onto the stud and make them flush or just above the top of the stud) and carefully hammer it in. Use locktight on the stud to help seal it and also help to keep it in. Make sure the top of the stud is even with the rest and you're done. No need to pull a head or have some shop charge you a bunch of cash to do the job. If you were closer i would do it for you.

the threads on one of the studs is mangled i.e helpful neighbor. so i am probably out of luck huh. what do shops charge? i already started pulling it all apart because i thought i was screwed

Well stop if you have not gone too far. See if you can run a Die on the stup to clean up the threads and continue to do the repair 4X4HIGH said. Or just try the repair he suggested and re-install the head and whatever else you took apart.

Come on Robert, you're in Socal so go fix it for him. I have faith in your ability to handle this for him. You could be a HERO. :D

Make sure you buy ARP studs. There is not a better stud out there and they aren't that much money.
