Socket organization.

in my line of work you need 12 point as well as 6.. there are quite a few 12 point bolt heads in marine apps...

When you guys are talking about 12 point bolt heads, you are referencing something like this?

I've never run across anything like this, except the external torx bolts on the bmw bell housing, and those need torx bits anyways. For a wrench, the 2x more degreeing angles of a 12 point help, but on a socket, you can just rotate the socket, and retain the strength of the 6 pt design.

Am i missing something here?

ford 4x4 axles with factory flat flanges for years use 12 point bolt heads, and with lots of yellow locktight :angry1:

6 point sockets don't fit those... look at em, every flat wall where a six point socket would sit, has a point sticking up...

lots of marine exhausts have em, some turbo's, etc.....

I use these from Sears. No problems for all three size sockets.

got those in 85, still use the 3/8s set as the grab it and go.

I cut it down to where all the sockets cover the rail. Gives a quick visual if any are missing.

FWIW, My sole Snap-On rail has worn out, the Craftsman are still going strong...:waytogo:

I have converted everything else over to the Hanson trays...

Yep, understood. But that is the head style you are referencing?
I RARELY run across those, and have a 12pt set in my truck if i ever do.

I just figure 6pt is less likely to strip fasteners.

6 are fine.. and yes, on stubborn fasteners they help.. just pointing out that 6 pointers don't get ya by for everything...

I like the hansen trays a lot. Been using them for 4 or 5 years now. Nice way to organize your stuff.

A nice set to keep around is this one too: link The spline drive stuff works on 6, 12, torx, rounded-off, and square-drive fasteners. It's not perfect and doesn't always get the really stripped stuff, but it's saved me from having to use ez-offs quite a few times. Very handy set to throw in a car/truck before you go on a road trip too. I picked up mine on ebay for about $90 and it came with the best ratcheting screwdriver I've ever had:waytogo:

Yes, that is the head style, not very common, but they are out there. I use 6 pt all the time, and in the rare instance I need a 12 pt socket, I grab it out of the portable kit or just use a wrench. You hit the nail on the head.

Sweet. My main concern was with what drawers will be deep enough for the hansen setup....cause I haven't laid hands on the box i ordered.

We'll see how it works out!

I think my 4" drawers are just deep enough for the 1/2 drive sets, any of the shorter drawers don't work. I have most of them in the top under the lid, but I do have a couple with impact sockets in the 4" drawers. The 1/4" or 3/8" drive may fit in a 3" drawer, haven't tried.

I'm a newb when it comes to real tool box setups, so i'll see where it all fits when it shows up. I'm rather excited. :)

i have the hansen holders and don't care for them. they are nicely made and easy to read but i like to take my socket tray to where im working and the first time you drop it or knock it over you will be very unhappy.. im going back to the magnetic tray holders as said before.

Definitely a valid point. But so far, haven't had a way to carry them around, so doubt i'll miss that. We'll see.

If i end up wanting to carry them around, i'm blaming you for putting the idea in my head :D
