Solenoid or Starter ???

My starter has been acting funny ( on my 89 corsica ) It would engage for about a second or 2 and then the gear would just drop out and spin. If I kept trying the car would finally start. So I got a new solenoid and installed it, and it does the same damm thing. Do you guys think the starter is bad?

Def the starter- it's all working just disengaging so it has to be the starter.

How about the starter drive? AKA Bendix

Check for a worn section of the ring-gear.

i thought bendix was a coaster brake company that built hubs for bicycles......

but yeah, sounds like the bendix to me.
