did anyone else’s Chevy come with a firewall mounted solenoid (solo, not attached or even close to starter physically)? Like a Ford?

yes mine did and I am still using it. Thou I changed the wiring.
What do you want to know.

So it came wired for this and everything, but after chasing a developing electrical issue I’ve landed on replacing this. Anything I should know for the swap?

weird..

coming from the guy that incorporates his own slave solenoids in every rig... never seen a "factory" setup like this on a GM...

mine wasn't factory. Get a good quality normally open solenoid.

I move my battery cable from starter to one big on this solenoid,+ the fuse links, and the crank signal wire to one of the small terminals. Then ran a 04 ga cable from the other big lug to starter big lug, and a 10 ga wire from starter big lug to crank signal terminal.
So when truck is running there is no power what so ever at the starter. When the cranking is commanded the 1st relay closes powers the 04 ga cable which powers the 10 ga and the starter solenoid closes and cranks the engine. This doesn't seem to work with the new style little high torque starters. only the big old school starters.
