could you make your tie-rod out of say 1.5" solid bar and then just drill and tap the ends?? I think it would be super strong compared to DOM tube.

If I remember correctly, tubing should be stronger than a solid bar. The reason is the tubing has 4 walls (2x inner, 2x outer) to resist flex/damage, whereas solid bar only has 2.
Of course, adequate wall thickness plays into this as well.
