its just articulation of the springs. the more "flex" you have, essentially the bigger the obsticle you can go over with keeping tires on the ground to get traction
And to Heather- muddybuddy is correct. The key to 4wheelin is getting traction. Flex is how much your springs can articulate (move up and down)...and the more articulation you have, the better chance you have of keeping all 4 tires on the ground when you are going over a big obstacle...say a rock. That being said, 4 tires on the ground = more traction.
Here is an example of a truck, which if had no flex, would have probably rolled.
