First I'll start with my new knives. One is EDC but they are both nice I think.

This is my Benchmade Bushcrafter. I've been wanting a nice 3-4" fixed blade and fell in love with it. I checked Amazon and couldn't find the color I wanted or beat the price that they had on it by enough to lose color selection and not get the leather sheath. The alternate color comes with a kydex sheath and I wasn't impressed with it.

It's got a nice feel to the handle and I like the drop point a lot. It's a little heavy but not near what the Becker BK2 by KABAR weighs. The blade is S30V, just over 1/8" thick and full tang.

The first thing I noticed was that when you unsnap the loop, it would hang close to the blade as you withdrew the knife. I bought some shock-cord from an outdoors store yesterday to use with deploying my new tarp as a rain fly for my hammock and got to wondering if I could modify my sheath to use the shock-cord to pull the loop out of the way like the Hedgehog Leatherworks sheaths do.

Using a 1/16" punch, I pounded four holes in the strap. Two close to the snap and two back where the loop connects to the body of the sheath but leaves a small gap for the knots to go. I used a piece of .030" welding wire I had rolled up from a wire change to fish the cord through the holes. This is NOT as easy as it sounds till about the 3rd hole. After getting it tied in there, it works awesome! Pulls the loop back against you when you open it so it is no where near the blade when you draw the knife. It also had no noticeable affect on snapping the loop back to secure the knife again either.

I've very pleased with this knife so far. I've only had it a few days but I carried it around yesterday evening messing around outside some and used it a little. Looking forward to getting out in the woods with it.

Next is my new Kershaw Ken Onion Blur. I wanted a new EDC knife after almost closing my Buck Stockman midsize on my fingers doing some work in the shop. :eek1: We went on a trip to Gatlingburg the last week of February with some friends of ours and I always stop in at Smokey Mounting Knife Works while we are down there. I went to look at another Kershaw knife but I was not impressed with it.

Seeing the Blur, I immediately liked the feel and size of it. I figured what the heck and bought it. So far it's been great. It comes set up to carry in your left pocket but I switched it to right hand since I found myself switching hands before opening it. With the stockman, I never noticed since you had to have two hands to open either way. So far I really love this knife. It's easy to get out, open and into action and has held an edge just great. I'm looking forward to many years of use out of this thing!

I also bought a Yukon Outfitters hammock and a Etowah 10x12 "Bushcraft" tarp. I'll get some pictures up of them when I finish with their modifications. The tarp is pretty well done, I just need to add some cord at the corners for tie outs to make going from a shelter to rain fly easy. I strung it up yesterday in the yard and with what I've done to it, it went up quick and packed away easy.

On the hammock I've got to order some Amsteel cord to make woopie slings for it and I think it'll be good to go.

I'm going to use this set-up to do some backpacking and in the K5 instead of a tent on the overnight runs where we don't make a camp for the weekend, just mid-trail.

Got my cord and some tree saver straps ordered last night. Hopefully be able to test my hammock out this weekend!

Got my whoopie slings made and put on my hammock. I'm want to try to string it up this weekend and see how it does.

Will do! It's kind of a busy weekend for us so I may not get the chance to get up in the woods. There's not any trees close enough together to string it up in my yard.

No luck. I walked out a little bit but couldn't find a spot to set everything up. I found a spot to set up the hammock but there was a sapling right in my side and no way I could set up the tarp like that. Did manage a fairly flat lay in it for a few minutes but packed up and went looking for a better spot. Alas, one was not to be found.

where are you, in a parking lot??? :haha: even so, cars should be good enough set up spots!

I demand a greater effort!

Windy day and lots of widow makers hanging above me or a 3" tree between the one I could tie off of.

I'm going to try to go again this weekend if I get a chance. Too far behind in being alive to live?
