Well ok everybody, I was over at a friends house today, we were messing with the radio I have between the seats, (no factory radio) and I told her to start the truck since the power inverter drains the battery fast, and when she did, it had a knock, like a lifter knock, I tracked it down to the driver side, near the front, like Cylinder #1 or #3.

So after I left for the 30 miles home, about 5 or 6 miles on the highway it went away, but I had the radio off to keep track of the knock, then on a steeper hill, I heard for the first time what sounds like pinging, or maybe a slight rod knock, terrific, but it was only there under a load, like speeding up or hills.

Well I made it home without any problems, and I don't know if it would be ok to pull the valve cover yet, or wait until morning, when everything is cooled off, to try and find our loose lifter. And how do I deal with what I think is pinging/spark knocking?
Wouldn't that be a timing issue? How do I go about timing an SBC? Chain? or Distributor? Or could it be a fuel issue? I have a 2 barrel Rochester on it, and it has always seemed like more than enough fuel (not sure on size, 400-500 CFM range)

On a completely unrelated note, do the rubber seals go with the top or stay on the truck? And are there any hidden bolts to the top? I have all of the bolts out, from the bedrails and the back of the cab, I can even lift the front of the top, but the rear will not budge, I tried prying on it, and all I mananged to do was take a chip out of the fiberglass.

I found 4 bolts under the bedrails near the tailgate, the ones the same size as the other bolts would just spin in their place, and the big ones are not budging, even with a small can of PB blaster emptied on them, I don't think they need to come out, ever. I have good reason to doubt the top was ever off this truck, EX Gov't.

Remember, I am just 17, and very much an ametuer at all of this, so bare with me.

you need to find out what cly it is then go from there. could be several things. lifter issue. could just tighten rocker. stud could be pulling out of head scene that a few times. also carbon could be built up on valves also could be loose wrist pin. this noise could be a lot of things i would look at the lifter first when you pull the valve cover check all the push rods (yes on both sides of the engine.) don't forget top dead center !

P.S. make sure the oil is full. what psi is the oil when running at cold and hot ?

I have no idea what the oil pressure is, It has idiot lights, which I hate.

(I have another guage cluster, but I am too lazy to get it in)

Could be an internal issue, but I would try to rule out a manifold/exhaust leak first. They are not uncommon on these trucks, they usually start as ticking sounds, and will get louder under load.

I'm not sure what year your truck is, but on mine there's a bolt on either side of the top, at the rear of the truck that goes in from the bottom. You have to pull back the interior bedside trim to access them. No need to reinstall them once they're removed IMO.

griff what didi we find out ? have you started the truck since?

Griff I have a 1987 Blazer and have looked in to the lights to gauges swap. It can be done but the harness for the gauges needs to be repined (wires changed around). On the radio side I did a full face in to the knob style.

The topper yes there is one bolt on each side that goes from bottom up. As stated remove and not put in. I had topper off once and can't remember 100% but think only seals on bottom of topper. I have thread on replacement seal numbers. I can search for it and check if you can't find it.

My truck too was a Government vehicle too (not military). The best investment I ever made was becoming a member here. The ability to view and do far out weighs the small cost.

Let us know what you need we will try to help.

Agree with pulling the valve covers....wish you could see the oil pressure. These noises most likely are something simple, like an exhaust leak...however can be more difficult issues. Keep us posted and welcome!! Get the membership, BTW!

You're all going to laugh, but I fixed the tick by richening the fuel mixture on the carb. And I fixed the pinging with that, and putting 97 in it.

I finally pulled the top off last night, and I have no doubts that is has never been off the truck, the bed rails are still blue. (it was a Blue truck, then painted desert tan, then white.)

Update:
Well boys and girls, I was tricked, the tick was gone all of friday, and saturday, but now it is back, the pinging is completely gone, while I'm over the moon about that, this tick is starting to really bug me, but heres the other problem, as a 17 year old, the money situation is a bit limited, as in I can either get valve cover gaskets, and fix my tick, or eat lunch next week.

Also, I am tempted to just leave the top off for a while, and just throw my big camouflage tarp over the bed like I did last night, I don't see any reason that wont work.

sh*t griff pm me your address i have several sets of new valve cover gaskets i will send them to you

Hopefully it's something simple. Every tick I've found has either been exhaust/manifold leak, or torque converter bolts.

Unless you have a high compression motor, it should run fine on 87 Octane. The high octane gas may be concealing another problem, like excessive carbon buildup or a timing issue.
