Yep. This one was supposed to be a reman from Southworth. The machine shop I use locally. Guy couldn't get it running. I went and looked at it(90 k5 jimmy) than talked my brother in law into buying it. Guy thought it needed an ECM. Water temp sensor was broke. We towed it home. BIL fixed misc shortcomings while getting it running. He is frustrated. Get it timed and running. Tranny leaks. Fix those. Still runs. Gets it up to temp and shuts off. Next day he goes to start it and sounds like a tranny knock. He tells me this over breakfast one day. I'm thinking something sounds odd. It started once and knocked. He shut it off. I crawl underneath. Checking things out. Tried to start it. Wouldn't stay running. Definite knock but it isn't tranny. Harder to start. And finally no start. Darn it!
Pulled a valve cover and found loose rockers. Darn it again. Tell him the bad news he'll have to pull the engine. He cleans a spot in the garage for it and proceeds to get to work. He comes and borrows stand and hoist. Today he tells me it's on the stand. I stopped by after working today. Start pulling it apart cause things aren't adding up. No plate marking from Southworth and no stamp near the numbers indicating machine work. Southworth does phenomenal work on all that they do. Pull the heads off and the pistons say .030 on them. But they are not new. They have nicks all over. Rotate the engine to inspect walls. Cyl 7 has a flaw. Darn it again.
More to the story later.
