I'm going to dig in a bit, but what do you suppose is the culprit here? Brakes, seepy oil seal? It's a 14bff. Was checking it over before a short trail ride later.
Well, it's as pretty as when I put it together 10 years ago. Not brake fluid. Must be seeping back from the spindle.
It may have been a bit loose. Anyone know if it's right to have just the bearing, then the threaded ring, and a block + pin?
I've read that the proper procedure is 50 ft-lbs, then back off and go to 35 ft-lbs. Then tighten as needed to reach alignment for the block. Sound right?
Yeah the inner seal is dripping down onto the drum and swirling it into the shoes.
Need the good two piece seal and some new shoes. I would brakleen the drum real well then hit it with a map gas torch and burn all the oil out of the casting.
Thanks. Is there any way that having the preload loose could lead to leaking? It was pretty loose when I pulled it apart. For now I put it together per spec and will keep an eye on it, though I know the shoes are oily and won't really perform. I didn't have it in me to fight with all those springs today.
