I have a 1985 K30 1 ton 454, 4 speed i just got.

Last night i was driving to church from the house. Picked up my buddy and i noticed the truck was over charging at about 18v. I just got this truck and only had it for about three weeks. I thought that it was just the gauge. It did that about about 20 miles. A block from the church i touched the power locks and the truck died in the road. Radio, lights and horn all work. Doors have no power, windows have no power and flashers have no power. Truck dose nothing when i try to start. Not even a sound. I tried to jump it but nothing. I haven't taken a reading at the battery yet. I checked all the fuses under the dash thinking that was the problem. i didn't find anything. The truck is still at the church. I would like to try and get it home before i have it towed. Any ideas on something else would be great. I don't want to put a battery and alternator in it and still have nothing when i try to start it. Maybe another fuse block or something inline. Any help would be so great. Thanks.

Overcharging would be the alternator. Can't think of any other reasons for it.

Where in Colorado are you?

I'm in Greeley the truck is in old town fort collins. But if i put a new one in with a new battery would it start? Would i get power back. I would think so but could i be over looking something?

Sounds like you have a blown fusable link, either by the starter or on the firewall at the junction block

Nice i didn't check those it was dark last night. When you say by the starter like where in line? the same goes with the firewall. im guessing by the steering shaft. another question i have is it looks like the 454 should have two batteries. it has two trays for it. do you guys run two of them?

The fusable links are on firewall at battery junction block, right behind engine, and there is usually some wires coming off the starter post.

Dual batterys are 100% necessary, just depends what you use the truck for.

ok how can i tell if it went bad? My truck is just going to be a round town truck. A nice cruiser. Thanks

Fusible links are a strong possibility, but combine that with the sudden overcharging, and I suspect a loose ground.
Take the battery cables loose and clean them, then check where the ground wire hooks to the truck, and all the other grounds you can find.

Agreed. Exact same thing happened to me about a year ago. The culprit was bolt holding the negative battery cable to ground.

A battery with a dead or shorted cell can cause the altenator to overcharge--so can it losing its voltage "sensing" curcuit if its the older style altenator with the 2 pronged plug in the side of its case--if it has no voltage or low voltage present there,it will assume the battery is low,and boost the output up to compensate--of course it could just be the regulator itself has failed internally also...

If a fusible link burnt up,that can cause what I just listed..I'd suspect one is burnt because of the windows and some other curcuits aren't working..

Check your battery, like stated if dead cell it will over charge.

Try jumping it. I had a dead cell in mine not to long ago and it would run down the road all day long. The second I shut it off, it would just click. Jump it and it would run.

I'm just south of you in Hudson. If you ever need a hand let me know

got the truck home this morning. Looked under the hood on the driver side firewall and saw one burnt up fusible link. Just melted. Look at the other one and it was also junk. (that block that is bolted to the firewall left of the brake booster) Then checked the battery voltage and its got 5.6 volts in it. So my plan today is to get a new battery and two new fusible links. Then see if i get power back to the door. Start it and see if it jumps to over charging if so then pull the altenator and get it tested.

Wow thank you buffblazer for offering to help.

Well let us know how it works out. Next step would be to figure out why it blew. I had a ground problem once that caused my links to blow

Usually when the alternator starts overcharging, a lot of times those links blow.
I would say first test the battery, if it's bad change it and test the alt.
If the alt is dead too, then replace it and you have nothing left to go bad.:dunno:

So small update for tonight. Got home changed out three of the four fusible links. The fourth one was burned but not as bad as the rest of them. New battery in. So i tried to see if anything changed in the truck. NOPE still a dead truck. Next ill change that last bad looking link and try again.

OK heres an up date. Fixed the last burnt fusible link. Hooked the battery back up and power to the doors and the starter. or at least the fasten seat belt sign comes on. BUT the door lock are locking on there own. So i'm guessing on the block with the fusible links something is touching something that shouldn't be. So could someone tell me how it need to be or why its doing that?

Thanks again everyone.

OK i need a little bit of help. So the truck starts But the locks go non stop and i don't have blinkers or hazards but they glow when the light are on. Lights and heater work. Also when i started it and drove it the truck didn't over charge. So i guess that is OK or should i still change it? Any ideas on the locks and blinkers? Please help...

Bad ground.
Try to use jumper cables and link the battery negative to the frame and to the engine and see if things get better.
Now the lock unlock could be a stuck switch, but could also be because of the bad ground.:dunno:
