Son needs K5 help

OK, no point in discussing further I guess, it took me some time to realize that people saying headers are better weren't just making that up because they only wanted to justify running them.

We can disregard the fact that GM has tried numerous times (and continues) to get the benefits of headers while still being as low maintenance as manifolds.

Manifolds

I have a set I will donate to his cause, let me know what you want do. I may even spring for shipping if he is getting good grades. Later J.

Headers are only a pain in the ass if you get cheap ones. You need atleast a 3/8" thick flange. If you get a good quality set of headers, a good quality set of gaskets, and possibly some of the Stage 8 locking header bolts, then you're headers will be as trouble free as manifolds. To get the good shiit, you have to be willing to pay for it.

My buddy has these headers on his '84 K5-

These are the Stage 8 bolts-

It's a CA emissions truck, the headers have all the AIR tubes to make them smog legal. He runs the Stage 8 locking bolts, and has had no problems with it in the 3 or 4 years he's owned the truck.

If your son wants to get headers, stay away from the parts house cheapies if the pocket book allows it. Something like the Edelbrock set that I linked too, or Thorleys-

Many thanks to everyone that responded to the headers issues. jaros44 many thanks to you for your kind offer for the manifolds. My sons grades are average but he has shown a lot of aptitude and "want to" when it comes to working on trucks. He's been learning disabled and has struggled with mainstream courses. I'm very happy that he has taken a positive interest in automechanics and can/will hopefully persue a career in this field.

Anyway I found out that the two header systems that I looked at on ebay wont fit angled spark plug heads. So I'm now hoping that we can have the exhaust manifolds surfaced so they will fit.

I'll keep everyone posted.

I'm glad he's doing well in school, that is a positive step. Interest is the key, it's all down hill from there, speaking from one who knows. Give him all the support you can and stand back and watch!! My boys were in my workshop since they were 5.
Any thing I can do for you or your son just ask. All the best to you and your family. Later J.
