has anyone seen a spare tire swingout on a suburban that mounts to the body? just figuring if there is a way to fab one up frankenstien style (jy parts!).....has anyone tried this?

Personally I would make one that mounts to a rear bumper. It's lot of strain to body panels if you have 35" tire on it.

yeah, it likely wouldn't hold. you'd really have to reinforce the bracket to multiple places on the body panel, and i bet to make it strong enough, you'd really hate the way it looks. i've seen one on a blazer and one on a bronco where they ripped out of the body... scary sh!t if you're cruising down the hwy.

the thing i don't care for about most of the swing-out style spare tire carriers that attatch to bumpers is that they typically don't conform to the forward slant of the body. however, it wouldn't be too hard to build one that did.

have you considered one of the swing-down, stinger style bumpers? that style is my preference. i'm getting ready build one soon...

I have one stock on my 78 K5...

It's off now.... but i was hangin on it on Sunday before it ook it off... and I weight 175...

Being 175 lbs and hanging on it every once in a while is a whole different animal from having a tire of a similar weight bouncing around on it over time. That type of stress just can't be trusted to sheet metal, in my opinion. I wouldn't drive behind a vehicle with an oversized tire on a mount like that, that's for sure!

Are these commercially available? If so, I'd like to install a mount on the framerail to offset the tire so I can still open one back door (barn style) without having to drop the tire all the time.

I wish they were. Im just trying to figure out my options at this point. I think I will try someone local to fab something up since I dont have the welding skills everyone else on the board has...hehe

If anyone has pics of theirs Id love to see'em cause I need some ideas!

I'll be doing my version of Dontoes, DPI's, Sapper, etc...

swing-down is the way to go imo, at least for me....

what holds it up? how would you figure out how much to bend it out to clear a 19.5'' wide tire? trial and error,..and rear backup camera a deffinite!

I've got a swing out style that uses the original bumper with modified brackets. It holds a 39.5-15 TSL. It swings out to the right side and clamps down on the left. I'll let you have it for a good deal although shipping would be a bit due to size and weight.:wink1:

I think using this style, I could offset it and still have the taillight visible and be able to open the right side barn door. The carrier is skinny enough that it could be moved to one side or the other and I'm only running 33's (spares are both 31's) so its not alot of weight or size to worry about.:D

That'd be original as far as I know... might be tight, but I bet ya could get it to work...

I can't wait to get a bender...

well, thanks for the idea guys...now i just need to find someone who wants to fab something up here in NY for a case of beer or two :)
