I'm looking to add a spare tire carrier to the back of my '74 Blazer. Can anyone point me in the right direction where to get those ...?

Thanks!!

Tom

Always up to pic whore. Used the hitch that was already there and didn't cost much for materials and time. Has a 35" tire on it. Not the pics I wanted to post but you get the idea. Folds down and all.

I'm also looking for one of these. I'm hoping to find something like the Broncos have a swing out carrier. Anyone know where to get one? I want to install a 35" tire back there.

nobody really makes swing out carriers anymore because the spindle on the one end always breaks, but there is a vendor on here, blazenoffroad.com i believe, is designing a swing out carrier that looks pretty good.

They were available back in the day as a dealer installed option, generally made by Valley Industries. Vic Hickey also made them in the very early 70's.

To my knowledge, there are no currently manufactured swing out carriers that attach to a factory truck. That is, the ones I've seen go with an aftermarket bumper.

This is because the swing-out carriers have to attach to the sheetmetal, on the quarter above and below the tail light, and the tailgate. The good ones had a bent plate on the inside, to sandwich the quarter, but IIRC none of them sandwiched the tailgate. Since there's glass and stuff inside it'd be a tight fit. Even the weight of a 31" tire will eventually tear the sheetmetal. Been there, done that.

Should you want one, your best bet is likely Craigslist or your local equivalent. They show on Ebay now and again but can be expensive and a hassle to ship.

Or, as mentioned, you can go with an aftermarket bumper with a carrier. Might be a bit of overkill for a 33", but it's not gonna kill your sheetmetal.

For reference, some pix of the Valley Industries dealer type:

(The wrinkles at the top were not caused by the carrier.) I ended up welding studs all the way through the tailgate, since there's no window inside, so it's fairly solidly attached.

And the original use:

Thanks for the bump guys its appreciated.

Well, not a problem. I'll bump any product that looks great, is functional, build right.

Now, what would it take for you guys to build one for a first gen???? Do you have any plans for first gen bumpers. Are you in NorCal? do you need a donor first gen? I would guess the demand for first gen producs would be good, so what can you do? You can use mine as a donor. Love to have one of your bumpers.:D
