Spare tire carrier

It’s a very nice setup and a lot of thought went into it, but there’s a few things I don’t like about it. First, with the tire flipped up it’ll raise your COG. Second, I’m not a fan of mounting the tire in the cargo area since it just takes up valuable real estate that could be used for camping gear/tools/parts. Also it looks like with the tire flipped on top there would be no way to add any triangulation to the runners or spreaders of the roll cage. I’d much rather mount the spare on a swing out carrier.

I disagree with one thing, having it on top doesn't interfere with the triangulation of the cage he just chose not to.
It sits on top.
I agree with the rest though I tried on top and I tried inside and now I would only put it behind on a swing out or swing down

@imiceman44 The only reason I think it’d interfere with the triangulation is because it looks like the two horizontal bars on the tire carrier seem to hang lower than the roll cage. But until I see better pics from underneath when it’s flipped up in place or word from the manufacturer we will have to agree to disagree. :D

Yeah that one has a hard NO from this guy. Live with a flip down tire carrier for a while and you'll find a way to do a swing out setup. Granted that setup would not require as much movement to use as a bumper/hitch mounted swing down setup does. But lifting a 35" tire from the ground and then up again on the roof is going to bring the suck.

This is the first thing that came to mind.

Kinda strikes me the same as roll cages with lots of extra swirly bends - you didn't do that for function, you did it trying to impress people.

There's just too many other easier ways to haul a spare. I have zero desire to load/unload with more effort than necessary and this looks unnecessary. I can see this being popular with people that put angry grills on their Jeep.

Edit: I do respect the ingenuity of the design.

So Blazer Chalet came with spare tire carrier up front reducing the air flow I still have the original carrier in the shed . I moved it to the rear on a swing away.rear chalet.jpg truck st.jpg

I believe that the tire in the front restricting flow is a mith.
I drove mine all over the west coast and I had the 400sbc which supposed to be heat sensitive and I never saw the temp gauge go above 200 in the worst triple digit days driving in traffic or 80mph. And the chalet already has a long overhang in the back, I wouldn't add more weight and overhang.

I am not saying I want to put my spare on the roof, been there done that, no thanks.
But between a swing out and a tilt down, I will take the tilt down.
I had a 37" on the smurf mobile and it was pretty easy to put the tire on, secure it and then lift it up using the leverage of the tilt system.
I used a swing out with a 35" and it was a pain.
Now if I had the system this one guy here has ,a swing out with a lift that gets the tire off the ground and then swing shut, best of both worlds, then yes.

The good thing about it is air bagged to keep level and it does not have the tail heavy feel with the rear sway bar I got on it.

I had my spare on a simple swing down setup. The problem for me the tire had to move to allow access to the camper. That's not to take the spare off or on, just to access. It gets old quick on a week long trip. So in my case it was smarter for me to switch to a swingout to make the access to the camper easier. Yes, when the time comes to use the spare it's going to suck or require help to lift the wheel up there, but it works better for me this way.

May not be the best for some as a daily driver setup but for my needs getting it out of the bed was a must and it just looks cool !
