I've been using a tow dolly (a big one, not a U-haul) for my K5, which works ... but you know how it goes, we like to improve things ;)

I could put a set of trailer brakes on it easily enough, but I'm a bit concerned that if the front of the towed rig is braked and the rear isn't, that it'll want to get squirrelly.

Am I making that up, or is that a legitimate concern?

some brakes are better then no brakes. look at it this way, if you were driving the K5 and hit the brakes the front does most of the braking anyways.

I think if you already have the dolly and do not have room for a trailer its a good idea to add brakes. you can get the components really cheap if you stick with drums. Last time I bought brakes for my trailer I got a loaded backing plate for something like $46.
