Speedometer cable reattach

Didn't rip out. Reached under dash and pushed on clip to release. So far haven't been able to reattach. Just not enough room to get my hand up under there to do it. Do you have to remove the metal dash? I've got the dash pad off.

I've clipped the speedo cable back in without pulling the dash cluster, but it isn't easy--you have to turn the inner cable so the square drive lines up almost perfect before it'll push and clip in..
I have long skinny arms, thin hands, so I was able to do it,someone who has big paws or thick arms may not be so lucky..
I have changed every dash cluster bulb in many of my trucks without pulling the dash cluster too--it is very difficult, but do-able if your a skinny guy...

Once I got positioned right I could get to clip to refasten. However, another problem now. After reinstalling the instrument cluster, truck starts and runs ok, turn signal indicators work, but when pulling out headlight switch, there is a buzzing sound until pushed back in and it won't go into any gear. (automatic) Shifting was ok prior to reinstalling the cluster. Could not going into gear be related to anything on the circuit sheet or maybe pulled a wire loose somewhere while reaching up in there to get to the speedo clip?

Nothing is electrical on a '79 automatic trans, except a TH400,they use an electric switch on the gas pedal to make it go into passing gear when you floor it..A TH350 uses a cable to downshift when you floor it..
I'd guess you have other issues ,like extremely low fluid level, maybe water got in the tranny..

The buzzing headlamp switch might be an indication something is shorted out in the light circuits (Headlamps, running lights, dash cluster bulbs )--and the built in breaker in the switch is clicking on and off rapidly..

Thank you very much. One of those things that come to you in the middle of the night and wakes you up; I haven't checked yet, but I probably had moved the transfer case to neutral.

Yeah,I've had that happen while plowing, though I blew the trans or something "big!".....turned out the transfer case mount bolts were wicked loose and let it move when I rammed the snowbanks..

One day at my friends shop,a woman had a 2000 something Chevy pickup towed in--she said "the thing wont move in forward OR reverse--I think the transmission is junk,it has acted up before,my husband thought it was on its way out--how much to install a new one"?..

He quoted her $350,provided SHE got the transmission from whatever salvage yard,he didn't want to get involved in hassles if it turned out to be no good or didn't act right--she agreed, and a few days later a local salvage yard truck delivered a "low mileage good transmission",that costed her $500..

My friend installed it,I walked in his shop just as he was finishing up putting the transfer case back in,I helped him by holding it in place while he got a few bolts started...after it was all installed, fluids were filled, etc,he went to back the truck out of his shop bay,and....it wouldn't move..:doah:

He tried shifting to reverse,drive,nothing..then he had an idea,he reached down and went to move the transfer case shifter, and a loud gear grinding ensued!..he put the transmission in neutral, then shifted the transfer case into 2 hi,and it backed out fine!--then he went for a test ride,it shifted nice and he was satisfied it was a good transmission..then parked it,and called the customer, said your truck is ready, come & get it..

She got a ride to the shop, pays him,and gets in her truck and starts down the road..ten minutes later my friend gets a phone call--it was her--"I'm stuck at a gas station about a mile away--it wont move again!..you must have messed something up bad!"..

My friend said "I'll be right there--dont touch it!"..

He went there, gets in her truck, and sees the transfer case shifter is in neutral again!..he said "Here is your problem--you must have moved this shifter into neutral!"...
She looks and said "Oh my gawd,I put my purse handle around that thing,so it wont fall off and land on the floor"--she goes to show him,and just the weight of the purse and all the junk in it was enough to make the lever slide out of 2 hi ,and applying the brakes while moving probably made it go into neutral..

My friend assumed her original transmission was not "junk",and she didn't want it back, the salvage yard charged her a core charge, but she just paid it and said "you keep it,junk it,whatever"...

He ended up selling it to another friend for $100 "as-is",stating it "might" be junk and need a rebuild, but the guy put it in his truck and said the next time we saw him, "it seemed perfect to me!--lot better than my old one that burnt up and wouldn't even get me out of my driveway!"..
So she probably bought a trans for nothing ,threw $850 away, just because of her purse !..:surepal:

years ago i did not notice he 9/16 bolt thread size for the sifter lever on my 205 . i had the next size down bolt in there and it seemed o.k. until i went snow wheeling and cutting drifts for the little toyota's / nissan's / jeeps . she would pop out of gear cause the bolt come loose . had to have my passenger hold it in gear as i bashed the drifts . figured it out the next day and got the right size bolt thread and no more problems.

its the simple stuff that gets you most of the time . :doah::deal:
