Speedometer Head from a 89 to an 88

Guess mine is all fubar'd then, nothing like you describe on the back of mine, and i've had it out several times now. oh, and it's all stock.... oh well...

I have seen the box you are describing on other gauge assemblies I have picked up through the years, mine isn't like that, just a cable going into the back.

Then someone has removed the optic eye from the back of the speedo. If you remove the cluster you should see the mating plugs for the box in the upper left hand corner under the dash, there will be a plug with 3 wires in it and another with a single wire. The single wire goes to the cruise control while the 3 wire is HOT, ground, and ECM.

I have the same thing as Scott....optical sensor off the back of the speedo. Here is a pic of the green box and on the other end, the optical "eye" pickup sensor.

The 87' speedo I pulled from the junkyard also had the optical eye in it......

This would probably explain some things. I don't know if the diesel stuff ever used a speedo sensor.
