speedometer problem not cable

Anybody run into this my speedometer stopped working tried replacing the cable not the problem hoping it is not actual gauge any ideas.

Make sure the receptacle for the cable in the speedo gear at the t-case isn't rounded out...the speedo cable has a square end that *should* have a matching (but female) square receptacle in the t-case driven gear...these tend to get rounded with age....

That could be it but it kind of went all at once and this truck only has 73k miles on it a 76 blazer 350/350 np203 dana44 and 12bolt corporate speedo just went yesterday I will try looking at or relpacing that part the parts store did not know what I was talking about when I asked them for it.
