Speedomoter

Just a little word of warning, that little box adjusts you cable speed to keep your speedo accurate. Now that you have removed it, you need to watch your speed, or get an officer to check it, because you will now be off on the speedo.
Actually, that box should have the ratio stamped on it. Depending on his stock tire size and what he's changed to, removing might make his speedo more accurate, or it might make it worse. Also, it might not make a difference. The one that was originally in my stepside had a ratio of 1:1.00
Why was it even there? Who knows.

And yes, there is a McGyver like fix for the pin. Smash it with a hammer. If you're good, you get a snug fit out of it again. Or, you can buy a new one from the dealership. Last time I asked about it they wanted around 15 bucks.

That's a little odd to have a 1:1 ratio in one of those. The little reduction box that was in my Astro was 100 from the dealership, if the speed increase boxes are that cheap at the dealership then I should look into one to correct my speedo.

Figures $15 for a little pin... I bet if we look around at the hardware store or at home like mine [ Im a pack rat :) ] we could find some thing to fit just right.
When I check my speedo , if I ever get my truck back from the shop  , if the pin is bad I`ll look real hard for something.

EDIT: is it for the pin or the whole box?

What about using a small piece of an old speedo cable? Solder the ends to keep it from fraying, and it should work for that pin. Of course this is just my thought.

Yeah, that's what I thought. It was also a right-angle box. So the connection for the speedometer cable pointed toward the front of the truck. Wasn't straight like Mule's is. I figured maybe it was there to take an extra bend out of the cable? :dunno:

$15 for the pin, close to $100 for the box depending on where you go.

Well only one end of the pin is square though. The other end is fatter, round, and has a little nub sticking out of one side. I think it would be a lot of fooling around to successfully fab something reliable. I always figured I could just weld a small piece of square stock into the end of the ratio box, or something like that. I don't know. All my speedo's are working right now, so I quit thinking about it a while ago.

If you got it used , The P.O. might have just screwed up and got the wrong thing...?:dunno:

Don't worry, it's taken me a long time to get here, but it feels good.:D Seems like every time I buy a truck the speedo ain't working. I'm a regular speedo repair man now. Even fixed them for multiple friends and relatives. Actually, all guages for that matter. I've pretty much had to fix them all one time or another. The worst was in my stepside. You know that flexible printed circuit sheet that wraps around the back of the instrument panel? Every freaking circuit was blown it seems like. I just ripped it off and trashed it. Had to spend a lot of time soldering individual wires to each and ever light bulb and guage. You wouldn't believe the number of wires inside my dash, a regular rat's nest in there I tell ya! :haha: But on the up side, once I put it together you can't see the mess of wires, and it all works.:p:

I did not know that those ratio boxes were dealer items!!

I went aftermarket to get mine and it broke.

So did those ratio boxes come stock from the factory? If so is there one that reduces the cable speed by about 25%?

Yes there is, my astro runs a .8 ratio which would be pretty close, and I know that the dealer stated that some Astro's had .72 ratio boxes. Like I say they reduce the speed of the cable pretty good. I ran without mine, and was amazed how far off my speedo was.

Any possible part#s? If I got to the dealer it will take them 3 hours to find the right part.

I never got the part number, sorry. I ended up just searching for the right Astro van with the limited slip rear end, since it was the only one that ran that box. When I called the dealership, I explained the part that I needed as the gear reduction box that goes on the cable. Mine was an 88 Astro, so that may help reduce the time to find the part.

Thanks, I'll surf around gmpartsdirect.com and see what i find...
