I have read where some people weld the spider gears in the back for a posi effect. The question I have is can you do that for the front? I have a 79 K5 that is basicly stock except a 4" lift and was just woundering? If so would it affect steering? Driving?

You can weld both ends up . Will be solidly locked all the time . Steering is harder when in 4wd with the front locked all the time .

In 2wd , the front is a non issue . The rear however won't like sharp turns , tires wear faster , parking is going to make squeals and may be harder to turn .

So when in 2wd you wont be able to tell? I know the back is a bad idea to weld, but doing the front? Would it be like putting a locker in it?

You wont notice the welded or locked front end with unlocked hubs.
Im sorry I have so many questions...
How would it affect driving on the ice? Every once in a blue moon we get some snow and ice. Would it help to have the front locked up?

Thank you Again for all your help!!!

Do you have an NP203 t-case (full time 4WD)? If so, welding up the spider gears in the front will make the truck totally undrivable unless you have a part time kit installed.

Even if you have a part time t-case, I wouldn't weld up the front unless it was a trail only rig and even then, only if you can't afford a locker.

Yes on the full time 4x4.. I have the man. locking hubs. Just though that would help. I welded the gears on a jeep one time and 2 weeks later had to have it redone because I cant leave the bar with the tire scweeling just turning the corners. :eek1:
Cant really afford a locker right now. Kids and wife like to eat for some crazy reason..:doah:

I dont wheel much either I just though I would do it so when I wanted to go wheeling I would have at least the front locked up. One of these days I will go to 3/4ton and better gears, but not in the cards right now.

ya, lockers in the rear make driving on snow/ice really hard, i cant imagine driving in snow with the front locked. but as for now, i wouldnt weld either. they are only 1/2 ton axles and when you weld them you put a lot more stress on them and the carriers.so even though u might be saving money now, if it breaks, you dont have a truck to drive. most guys just start with the rear being locked and then eventually get a locker for the front. a lot of people dont even bother locking the front. it depends on how big and extreme you want to build it.

I would hope you weren't drinking and then driving. :deal: People don't take so kindly to this behavior, me included.

Welding the front will make it a pain to turn even offroad. A "locker" still has the ability to allow different wheel speeds when turning depending on how hard you're on the throttle.
