.....yeah the 14 bolt housing is toast :doah:, I do have another 14 bolt that I am rebuilding, but I'm on a budget. What are the chances that the carrier could be damaged? The race that is spinning is in the housing on the passenger's side of the carrier, I've put about 800 miles on the recently swapped rear end with a bearing and race replacement at 400 miles, the gears are in good shape however I want to avoid dropping money on a 4.56 and up carrier, or a set of new gears. I'm currently running 5.38s.

The 14 bolt that I am rebuilding unfortunately has 3.73s, and I plan on swapping the carrier, Detroit locker, an possibly ring an pinion over to the new housing. If the carrier is messed up then I have to either buy a new carrier or (if they offer it) buy a thick cut ring and pinion set.

Any suggestions? :dunno:

Since the 14b uses screw adjusters two things come to mind, are you getting enough preload on the bearings, and are you getting the caps torqued down tight enough.

I would doubt it's the carrier causing the issue myself. I would put it together in the new housing being careful to get preload and caps torqued. If it's still an issue you can stipple the race area and also use some loctite sleeve retainer.

I have a 4.56 carrier from a CUCV if you need one. But take it to PM's if we do price negotiating as its not allowed anywhere but the For Sale forums.

Thanks for the quick replies :waytogo:

The previous owner of the axle had a shady mechanic install the Detroit and 5.38s into the 14 bolt that I'm having problems with, my guess is what killed the housing is improper carrier bearing preload when adjusting for the proper ring/pinion mesh as you mentioned.

Also the race surface is grooved badly, I had a mechanic pull the carrier (cost me an arm and a leg considering I was stranded in Moab UT), he found a bunch of shavings and later shown me how marred the race saddles were on the passenger's side of the housing. He did dimple punch the saddle surface, used locktight, and preloaded the bearing properly, but it started making its typical metallic rattle/ vibration after the first 200 miles headed back home.

This isn't my 14 bolt, but here's the problem area....

What I'm wondering is what would be the possibility that these two surfaces could be damaged/ out of spec?

I would also like to point out that I have never set up a ring and pinion, however it's on my "to do" list :D

Carrier is probably fine. Bearing is pressed onto carrier, but just clamped into housing. Usually don't have a bearing spin on the carrier unless the bearing seizes or the machine tolerances were incorrect.

That's good to hear, I just recently picked up a master rebuild kit for the new housing.

I pulled the carrier out of the new housing, and the carrier bearing saddles are in great shape, just got done welding on some new spring perches and shock mounts, probably paint the housing tomorrow.

Second time's a charm, right? :doah:
