I've been trying to do some research on here about splayed caps. Is my thinking correct? ... you drill and tap the 2 bolt main block to accept the bolt holes and they are "splayed" at an angle to get good meat in the engine block?:dunno: Also, I realize this is probably a matter of opinion but I've read it in a few places that this not only makes a 2bolt stronger but also stronger than a 4bolt.

yes those are true .

but a good quality built sbc with studs and assembled correctly will hold 500 hp on 2 bolt main from what i have heard over the years. also a cast crank .

but installing the new cap's will require line hone on the main bearing area of the block and possible new special under sized timing chain for the small diffrence.

Fyi, I assume you're talking about sbc's? You cannot do the splayed bolts on a bbc, only straight as there are oil galleries in the way.

If your into having something that beats up the bottom end the splayed cars are good.

But you can't splay a 4 bolt main.

Whatchu building?

I concur with all the above....I would stud a bottom end before splayed caps unless a power adder is being used.

not saying old school is not fun anymore but the newer 99-up ls series are 6 bolt main 4 like normal and 1 in each side threw the block . my money if starting from scratch would be ls block.

yeah, they are the sh!t! durable engines for sure.

seriously? Haven't heard that...explaination please?

Yes,explain this to me. In my experience working on vehicles the ls oiling system is bulletproof. Crank driven oil pump and priority main oiling these things dont have oiling issues. My trailblazer makes 620 rwhp and the stock oiling system does just fine.:dunno:

Only the 97 & 98 had oiling issues. GM fixed the problem on the 99 up. Plus the perimeter bolt heads on the 97& 98 sucked also. So, Keep this in mind if you are looking at a LSX swap. If you are loking for heads for a LS, make sure they are center bolt heads.

I have a sbc with factory splayed main caps factory crank and rods with arp rod bolts I rev it really hard like holding over 6000 rpm

I shouldnt have come off like I had experience with it :doah: My fault.

I should have said that Ive heard and read about issues to the point where aftermarket companies have made blocks that are smallblock bottom end with LS style heads and intake apparently due to the oiling.
