spool/welded or locker

[ QUOTE ]
Every time one of these posts comes up I hear good things about detroits front and rear. This time it's different, everyone's saying SPOOL SPOOL (welded) SPOOL SPOOL!!! So tell me now, why am I spending almost a grand on detroits front and rear when a welded 14 bolt is free and a spool for the D60 is $180???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

If i were you, i would install some kind of selectable locking unit in the front axle, i did not heed the warnings from people, or actually i just wanted to find out for myself, and welded up the open carrier for my front diff, MISTAKE It sure is nice to have the added traction of the locked front diff, but as soon as i engaged it on the dirt road headed for the trail, i was absolutely amased as to how the steering was affected, it was almost scary to a point. Even on a dirt road, where the tires CAN slip, i still had to turn the steering wheel almost half away around to get it to just take a decent maybe 45 degree turn in either direction. Didn't like it, so i unlocked one hub and drove like that for awhile.
I even wheeled alittle with it in "3wd" it worked out good, though i'm sure putting alot of stress on one axleshaft is not the greatest in the world, then when i absolutely needed it locked, i had the spotter lock in the passenger side to get me through where i had to go.

But i am definately going to be removing the "Lincoln Locker" and installing some kind of selectable, i.e. Electric or air activated unit.

Basically DO NOT weld up an open carrier for the front diff.

Is also extremely hard to turn on the trail in tight situations to get lined up for any obsticals, steering does not respond at all.

Do these same characteristics apply to a detroit locker in the front axle? I'd like to be able to steer my rig once in a while /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

No. A selectable locker isn't necessary. You can run a standard automatic locker and be able to steer. Your steering input will be heavier but you can steer.

If you run standard steering you might have to make a 2 point turn where you normally make a 1 point turn when you are in 4wd. With crossover steering a front locker isn't even noticable for the most part. The only thing you notice is the extra traction.

I run a lockright in my front axle with 35" MTRs. Before crossover you notice the heavy steering (not unbearable by any means). With crossover it is a dream. You can steer and you can climb all kinds of stuff.

You can turn with an auto locker (detroit, lockright, EZ locker ect) just fine as long as you have no extra throttle input. It is real easy to do with a 203 or a twin stick. Kick in 2lo and steering is normal. I have no regrets abuot my lockright in the front and have yet to need the advantage of a selectable. I am the rocks only type though. I ran a welded rear for a year and change over to a detroit (one year on it now). It made the truck usable on the street again. I love the detroit as much as x-over.

I can steer just fine with mine now that my steering box is secured to the frame. I don't even really notice it. If it pushes one direction I just put it in 2wd for a second.

SCREW tire wear, this is a traction thing!!! /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif thats why i have two sets of tires, the 36x12.5x16.5 hummer tires($50.00 each)for the street and 39X16x16.5 boggers for stompin' this way I dont kill expensive tires with the spools /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif oh yeah, and welds do break, when your pushin this heavy truck around with his big caddy motor, thats why spools!! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif

Thank you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif that helps I have never ran locker or welded and I am not throwing out the money when i dont have to and if i can get a couple years out of tires thats fine Everybody in hear was making it sound like if you drove on the street with it welded it would start shooting chunks of ruber off your tires. /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif
