I have a 1986 Chevy K5, and I'm getting ready to take out my seats, carpet, and bed side interior panels. Then I'll need to prep the painted metal surface before I can spray in my bed liner. I've heard differing opinions on preparing the surface, so I'm turning to you guys for your testimony and recommendations. Should I sand all the paint off and get to bare metal, or is light scuffing the paint okay? I realize the bed liner needs "tooth" to grab onto, but how much is enough? I also plan on replacing my worn out seats with some out of a 2000-06 Chevy Tahoe. Anyone have experience with this either?

I'd appreciate any photos you kind folks can share too. Thank you again for the help and words of encouragement.

What kind of bedliner are you plannin on using? And you will have to build some brackets for those seats. If you do a search it should pop up with some examples.

I'm using a spray from an automotive paint store. They claim it's the stuff the Rhino Liner and Line-X folks come in their store and buy. I was under the assumption the seats would be a direct bolt in. If not, then idk. I'm an amateur welder, so I guess I could fab something together.

You do not need to take it to bare metal. Just make sure you get any grease and dirt and junk off of it. I normally scuff mine with a nylon cup brush, but you can use anything really. Needle scaler, heavy grit sandpaper, anything.

So they are telling you that Line-X and Rhino are actually that stuff? They are telling you a story man, Line-X and Rhino are not only a totally different product completely, I think Line-X is actually a hot spray product.

What is the brand name of the stuff you have?

And clean clean clean. Oils from your skin, oils from the truck, etc. Keep everything as clean as possible and this will avoid spreading the oil around. Clean it before you start to scuff. Clean it when you're done with an area. Then clean the whole thing once again just before applying the coating.

Look in the tech articles section. I did a write up on installing those seats. Not a direct bolt in, but not hard either.
