Anybody know how this broke?

post-1-1194849382.jpg

Can I just put a grade 8 bolt in and call it good?

Its called a center pin and yes you can grind the edges off of a grade 8 bolt (so the end is round)

It broke because your u-bolts are loose.

Thought the center pin was the one in the middle of the pack below the u bolts? This one is labeled number 5 on this picture.

My bad.

Replace it with a grade 8 bolt and forget about it. It probably broke because its an old, worn rusty bolt.

this is the spring pack clamp bolt that you broke.......sping pack tried to twist between leaves w/sideways force.....center pin's technical name is a tie bolt as it ties the leaves together and it could be loose let'n springs twist eaisly....did it spread the clamp or fan the leaves?

hmmm....sideload? could be just plain ole mechanical failure...grade 8 should fix you up...and there is supposed to be a sleve on the clamp bolt also, so bolt doesn't actually clamp springs but hold them aligned and slide as they flex

There is supposed to be a sleeve over the bolt, was it there before this happened?

All the spring packs (factory) I've seen had that piece, although I'm not sure how much they matter. If that wear is from the springs, then I'd say it matters quite a bit! :)

Edit: Blazin beat me to it.

They are factory ones, with multiple leafs added in and re-arched.

when I pulled it off is what you see in the first picture. Tomorrow I will take a look at the other side.

Here is a bigger picture showing the leafs better. If you look close you can see the bolt but not very good.

Perhaps they were removed, additional leaves or something in the packs?

I left the bolts/sleeves off after I put my Add a Leafs in, I know I should put them back in, just haven't yet. Only reason I didn't was because I didn't think to clamp the spring pack together to get them reinstalled. As it is now I couldn't fit the bolt because the springs are in the way.

There a custom pack made by a shop, there rated for a 1ton.

I could go snap some pics if you want.

Naw, I'm sure they are pretty much universal, from the wear on the bolt you posted already, I'd say the sleeves are a necessity if you can run them, eventually that bolt would have failed in the wear spots I'm sure.

When I took a look at the other side the leaf is riding on the bolt, so I doubt I could put a sleeve in.
