Spring damage from accident, State Farm may total truck?!!!

Body shop found that the passenger side steering knuckle was bent at the tie rod connection. So a new one is on order. Hopefully that is what will tighten up the front end again.

Now I just need the fender replaced and the truck is good.

don't order a regular one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

go with a flat top and do crossover steering down the road, try to request that if it's under insurance repair, otherwise pick up one yourself and maybe the shop will put it in for free.

ya x2 on this one.

but only small problem is older stock flattops were diffrent tie rod hole taper than 10 bolt stuff.

or here is a option. http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/HDsteeringknuckles.htm

So can I do this on the 89 Jimmy? I don't have my truck to look at how the steering is. So is this just a replacement of the passenger side steering knuckle and I'm good to go? Or do I then need a new tie-rod also?

I don't have much time on this to get done. Probably Tuesday the insurance will give the shot the go ahead and they will do a replacement.

So my questions are:

  • If I stay stock, where is a good place to get a replacement steering knuckle for the passenger side?
  • If I do this cross-over steering what do I need to do as far as parts go? I only plan to lift this truck with the 2.5" kit from Tuff Country in the future.
  • What are the benefits of this cross-over steering that you are talking about? I am working tonight so I don't have the luxury of reading articles between today an Tuesday when the insurance gives them the go ahead!
Thanks guys!!

if only 4" or less then skip the hd stuff and crossover.

need min 4" lift for crossover stuff.

and prob best to just find a good used knuckle from a 80's-91 solid axle 10 bolt like you have. and 3/4 ton use the same knuckle also.

If its under 4 inches of lift and 35 inch tires dont bother with the crossover. Because you'll have to lift it, get new knuckles (for a ten bolt) and get a new steering box (2wd version) Not worth it IMHO if your keeping it stockish.

Yeah, only a 2.5" or 3" lift and 33/12.50 are all the taller I plan on going with my daily driver.

Maybe the second truck will go bigger. Got to finish this one first though!!

I've got a knuckle for you. I am changing to crossover and already have the knuckle removed. You said passenger side right (double, triple checking). The ball joints are no good in them as I beat the crap out of it to remove the knuckle :)

Rather surprised anything could bend on that knuckle considering it's cast. I can throw mine in a flatrate box, bout 15 bucks, paypal me 20 if ur interested.

Let me see what the body shop says tomorrow. They may have one to order already, I don't know. Insurance is paying for it, but they want me out of that rental truck I got also.

I'll PM you tomorrow K85 Octane and update you on if I need to purchase it or not. Thanks for the offer!!!

I called Auto Zone and they have my Moog Ball Joints and Drop Pitman arm. So I know where the body shop needs to replace them from. I won't stand for any chinese crap on the rig!!!!

I would
pitman arm for 2.5" lift
Raised steering arm for 4-6.
A combination of both for higher lifts when crossover isn't an options
Or like my cousins ~7" lift, drop pitman arm and D60 steering arm lift block lol.

Pitman arm is trashed from accident along with passenger steering knuckle. So both are getting replaced as are the ball joints.

Damn State Farm to hell in a basket!!!!

Replacing the knuckle and leaf spring is to much money an they want to total the vehicle!!! WTF!!!

They only dished out $1300 for the fender damage and tire, but the knuckle and leaf make it a total loss??? So they are saying my 89 Jimmy V8 is only worth $2200 dollars!!! That is bull****!!!!

I've heard of this buy it back thing! What is that about? Wouldn't then be considered a wrecked title?

Yep, most likely Salvaged Title. Inspection then licensing and back on the road.

Again, it may differ by state but what Progressive did for me was offer two values. One was the amount they were willing to pay to cover the value of the vehicle. That amount I would get regardless. The second amount was what they would offer to pay to come take the rest of the vehicle away. If I accepted their "salvage value" they would add that amount to the value of the vehicle and send a tow truck to pick it up.

In my case, I declined Progressive's salvage value offer, got my settlement check from them and sold the remaining body and parts to a buddy (for more than they were willing to pay!) but I could have just as easily kept the car and rebuilt it.

Yeah I plan on being buried in my Jimmy or passing it onto kids if I like them! Otherwise I am getting buried in my sweet 1989 Jimmy!
