I am putting a grizzly locker in my 14BFF to replace the G80 locker. I purchased an open differential case from a junkyard and when I was removing the old carrier bearings I noticed one of them spun freely. Is this carrier trashed or can I save it? Do I even want to save the carrier since it will be under heavy loads? Any ideas? Thanks.

I would say a new carrier is cheap insurance. You figure if you blow it up and ruin your ring and pinon you just paid for the carrier. Plus you have to get it home. And it will break at the worst possible location at the worst possible time.

Just thinking the same thing. Just wanted to see if someone had any success in repairing one. Thanks.

Repairing one? Can't really be done reasonably.

You can always tack the bearings but if you don't want to do that the junkyard should let you swap the one you have for a good one.

Theoretically the carrier bearing surface could be welded a bit and then milled down in a lathe but not really worth the effort vs. getting another one.

Chris,
Local junkyard didn't have one (that's Charleston, SC for you!) so this one came from Indiana. Emailed the guy about making the deal good, but his ad did say "As is, no refunds". Should have known that for $69 the deal was too good to be true. Looking at a new one for $261 at National Drivetrain. Thanks anyway. - Wes

I did think about tacking it in place. Then I thought about all those potential little pieces in the Diff if it was to let go. Now I'm thinking "stop being cheap" and just get a new one for peace of mind. - Wes

I have in certain situations fixed them with this stuff from loctite. Don't remember what it is called but it worked every time like a charm. The new carrier is by far a better way to go but there are other options out there

I always used loctite on my bearings when I install them in a press fit application. Loctite 609 or 680. I use it even if both parts are new to keep it from spinning on the shaft. It shouldn't spin if you have the correct preload but I do it for peice of mind.

what carrier ratio did you need ?

we can get you a good one for less.

heck i got 4.10 and 4.56 opens for cheep.

I needed 4.56 open carrier. I have already placed an order for a new one. I wish I had not jumped the gun so quick! Next time I will ask sooner if any one has spare parts for sale. Thanks for the offer. - Wes
