Sputtering: i changed the plugs and wires was low on gas so i filled it up. when i drive or accelerate it sputters, kind of like a mini back fire but in rapid sucession. what could that be? idle it runs fine with little lope, little pedal is fine when i stomp its fine about %50 of the time. but as im driving down the road trying to pick up speed either going fast or slowly i get sputtering and loss of power. It never dies but sound so sickening.

Timing or carb out of adjustment. Fuel filter could be stopped up.
 
You have plug wires on wrong and/or not seated onto plugs, always look at the last thing you touched when your truck WAS working and then its NOT.

Could be clogged fuel filter as well.
 
I have to say it was doing that to start with, thats why i changed the plugs and wires. still does it. guess ill try the carb cleaning. then go distrib. i guess. i hate this part of trial and error.
 
I would check the fuel filter. Very Simple and cheap item to change. Then Check the timing and see if you have any vac leaks. If all checks out start looking into the carb.
 
I'd see if the gas has water in it....kinda hard to tell with ethanol gas though,it wont settle to the bottom like it used too,it will stay "mixed" and look a bit milky...water wont pass thru a paper element gas filter too easily either,and can starve the engine for gas.................................................................................................................................................................................................................when you take off the filter,try not to spill all the fuel in it and try blowing thru it,and see if it has a lot of resistance,also catch the gas in a clean container and see if any water is mixed in with it...letting a vehicle sit often lets condensation build up in the gas tank,its possible to get a few gallons of water if it sits long enough under the right weather conditions..

Did you put new gas in it? How long has it been sitting? I've had problems with gas in as little as 6 months, sitting.
 
OK. new plugs, wires, (ensured 5-7 werent crossed), distib cap, anddistrib rotor. all this narrowed down im thinking it will have to be Carb issue. it was almost empty when i got it and filled it up so what was in there shoudl ahve been flushed by now. this weekend ill check the filters then on to the carb...

is there anything that can be poured in to the tank to help of there was trash in it with out ahving to drop it?
 
Water will normally come out with the gas (if it will run lol) but the trash in the tank has to be removed by dropping it. I always see junk in the bottom of the fuel tanks (and I've had a number apart) but never seen enough to worry about losing flow, even on '67 Firebirds that had been sitting for who knows how long.
 
Mini backfire? I'd say distribution. What year is your truck? I'd swap out original distributor for HEI and you'll probably never have the problem again. It's probably a bad ignition module. Get an HEI that has everything internal.
