squealing disc brakes

Let me know what you find Dave, I need to do the same thing to my wifes VW JETTA. New rotors, and new gold ceramic pads and they started squealing after 400 or so miles.

:waytogo:

Here are the brake pics from my daughters car:

As they were installed with squealing....she said it only squealed when cold, after they got a few stops on them they quieted down:

The pads have the clip on shims on the back side (the little springs that go in the pad came out when I took the caliper off):

The rotors still have the crosshatch marks in them, and the pads look new:

The disc brake grease applied to the caliper where the pads will make contact. Also applied to the piston surface:

As installed:

She took it for a test drive, the brakes were about 50* at the time (ambient temp) no squeals....we'll see how the next week goes.

You should have put some of that grease between the shim and the pad backing also. If it comes back, do that next.

That's pretty much how I do it, I also put some on the piston area that touches the pad as well, usually the surface between the shim and the pad has a removable layer of plastic revealing some sticky stuff to hold it in place, but yes, grease on every metal to metal contact point and relube the slide pins.

The grease won't go anywhere because there's not enough movement to sling it anywhere, as long as you're not gobbing it on :D and it doesn't get THAT hot to burn it off or anything, never had any problems with mine, families or friends brakes making any noises after I replace them.

yes forgot about between the shim and pad, but the slide pins? are greased with anti-sieze, and there is some disc grease on the piston where it contacts the pad.
asked her today if any noise....none so far, not even cold which is where it was aproblem before...but now she notices a squeak in the rear, which I think is a drum return spring as she said it only happens when she stops and lets off the brake.

I had the same issue with my Nissan sentra, replaced my front pads twice with top end brake pads and after a week or two they would squeal... Asked my mechanic friend about it, he told me to go buy the cheapest pads I could get. I put them on like the other 2 sets and no more issues. I've been buying the cheapo pads ever since. I haven't noticed any differences, I never could keep brake pads on my wifes cars anyway...

I have this problem with my front brake on my motorcycle. I can't get it to stop squealing but for a short time. Now, I just tell people loud brakes save lives.

i havnt seen anyone else suggest it yet,but did you take brakeclean and clean off the production oil that was on the rotor before you put them on.as it is it doesnt look like the brake pads have worn in yet.after the first 100 miles of use,the crosshatch usually is not there anymore.as long as it has gone past that first 100 miles, use them hard a few times and it should burn through that first metal layer on the rotor and help seat the brake pads.i like using the mid grade brake pads myself, wagner manufacturing.they have a semi metallic pad and it wont tear into the rotors like the ceramic.also the ceramic tends to build up more dust that the carbon semi metallic pads.so the need to be cleaned a lil more often or it will build up on the pads, rotors and wheels of the car.
