My dad has an 01 or 02 2500hd with the 8.1. There is what sounds like a belt squeal coming from the passenger side of the engine. He replaced all the belts, tensioners and pulley's to no avail.

Sound can only be heard at about 2500 rpm, if you let it idle and warm up its not there. Let it sit for 20 min then try to drive right away its there.

It is for sure coming from the passenger side mid- end of the Engine. I am stumped because it sounds exactly like a belt squeal. Any of the 8.1 guys have any clues? @Larry

Ironically an 8.1 I rebuilt has done that since day one and we gave up looking for it. But this one does it at only idle.

Plug the pcv vacuum line and see if the squeal is still there.

The 8.1 I did has stainless headers. So dunno, it may not even be same squeal. But it is annoying as hell either way. Did it without either belt on it too. Hasn't gotten worse or better in 2+ years and 25k miles.

Timing chain?

Get a short section of 1/2" hard plastic hose, use it like a stethoscope and poke about the engine while it's making the noise till you find where it's coming from.

I had a leak in an intake (not 8.1L) that would whistle, but only at certain RPM and loads. I told people it was a turbo. So I would believe an air passage like PCV or some gasket leak could squeal. Does he have barn cats?

No barn cats. I need to find my Stethoscope

I was thinking the same thing this morning. I had a L29 454 with an intake leak that made an odd squeal but it ran fine cold and warm. Found the noise by squiring carb cleaner along the intake.

I think weight be on to something with the intake leak. He has recently had maf sensor issues. I wonder if they are related.
