yea it was there when i got it some say it keeps the back window cleaner others say it improoves milage by killing the vaccume behind the truck at highway speed. i was given another one and was wondering if its even worth mounting on my burb?

I can't imagine it will materially affect mileage, not enough to justify drilling into the hardtop.

I've heard folks say it keeps the window cleaner. I can't speak to that, as the one K5 I have (of three) with a back window stays clean enough.

I'm just gonna come out and say it... If it is mounted at the proper angle, the wing on the topper of a blazer can not only keep the rear window clean, but also prevent exhaust fumes from entering when the window is down, and gain you some but not a lot of mileage. The principle of the thing is very simple, when you don't have one, the air goes over the back of the truck and swirls naturally from all directions, side and bottom included. When you have the wing, the air coming over the top is pushed down forcibly, eliminating the swirling effect and reducing drag by a fair amount. Talk to a physics professor about it, they'll confirm it for you.

I can't talk about the gas mileage (never really noticed). None of my K5's ever really got gas mileage worth a darn. It will definately keep the exhaust out ALOT BETTER! It also keeps the dust off the back window if you live on a gravel road. I've wished more than once my '91 had one. As a matter of fact, I've kinda been keeping an eye open for one....

Burb "Wing"

I put one on an '86 we had. I have no idea if it helped/hurt mileage. It would do a pretty decent job of keeping the dust off the barn door windows on dirt roads. It would not keep rain off because the rain is hitting on the roof, sliding back, and being pulled through the space between the roof and the deflector and down on to the window(s).

I've got one sitting in my garage I wouldn't mind getting rid of...off a 1989 suburban, with all the screws....shipping might be a little though...

Is the wing dealer installed, or the luggage rack? Picture states luggage rack.

Then again, with a luggage rack, I think the wing was integral. And now that you pointed that out, I don't recall an RPO for the spoiler. Anyone?

My buddy has one on the top of his '84-

:haha:

Where?? :)

Must have only been certain years then...I know I've seen integral wing/racks. My friend has had a few 70's and a 1980 K5, one of those had it.

Sorry have to disagree completely about the gas mileage saving comments. I've done 3 years of my BENG and my major is Aeronautics.

The possible change in vacuum brought about by the addition of the wing would result in forces so small as to be considered negligible on a vehicle of this size and level of performance. A scientist will be interested in the effects and an engineer wouldn’t bother......

Look at the aero set-ups on race cars, those that impinge on the airflow make great down force but are slower than their brethren sans the down force provided by the aero fittings.

Equate this to the 'upside-down' wing on the back of some blazers (I have one and its great for keeping dust off the back window) and account for the forces that are created by the abrupt change in direction on the airflow. A force balance equation will reduce the benefits to an amount to small to bother with, maybe even hurt mileage! When was the last time you saw a race car with air scoops on its back side?

It's kind of pixelated, but there's a "(dealer installed)" below the "wind deflector" text (I have one of these brochures that I found on ebay).

My K5 came with one, here is what I have found:

gas mileage: no effect. I've run with and without it.

Works great at keeping the rear window clean in the winter time.

Works great for keeping exhaust out when the rear window is down. This is not so important to me anymore as I run a soft top in the summer:)

I have to remove it to tie a canoe on the roof.

It cuts hung up on tree branches in the woods.

It looks kinda tacky to me.

sorry i though you meant one of those aluminum ricer wings:crazy:

Not sure who installed them but my dad's '79 had one when it was new. I have had a '91 and an '88 and each of those had one although they were a different style. My '90 does not have one. This is a good thing due to the tree hanger aspect.
