It`s weird. It`s happened about 3 times in the past month or two. He`ll be driving, stopped at a light, hit the gas, and it will stall out. The first two times, everything went out. IE lights, radio, etc. But he`s able to start it back up. This last time it happened, he said the lights, radio, etc stayed on,and when he started it back up, it was wanting to stall going down the road, and when he was stopped at a light he had to kind of two foot it to keep it from stalling. The second time it went out, the stupid security thing in the radio locked up,so now he has no radio.

I`m no mechanic/technician, but I checked a few things. I checked the ground on the frame, and the fuse boxes. Everything seemed fine.

Any ideas?

TIA

check engine light on or even work? my 93 started doing that and i was at a total loss as to what it was, finally got it though. cant remember does the 98 have cap and rotor if so check that, here is what all i replaced not sure which one or two actually cured it but its up and running. ses light said low ecm voltage, replaced alt, and batt, alt was extremly hot, still did it, then i rebuilt the fuel pressure regulator, stopped it for awhile, then i went ahead and gave it a tune up plug wires rotor cap fuel filter o2 sensor and water temp sensor, it wasnt throwing a code for the o2 or water temp but i figured it couldnt hurt, fired it up and its been running fine. hope this helps

Well the check engine light isn`t on, and works as far as i know.

Take a look at the battery connections. I think that '98 is one of the years that has TWO positive battery cables stacked onto the side post. One cable goes to the starter, while the other goes to a main battery power feed for much of the rest of the truck. The battery cable ends, a spacer between them, and the bolt, all get corroded over time and strange stuff starts happening. Pull it apart and wire brush all the connections then put it back together. There's a good chance that the stalling and "lights out" will all vanish. :cool1:

Thanks, I`ll check it out!

Ding Ding we have a winner....

My 98 did this, couldnt see any visible corrosion on the post, it was all inbetween the cables.. Having the truck cut off going 85mph down the highway isnt fun...

Update: Its actually a 99,not sure if it makes any difference.

It shouldn't. Newest body style subs didn't come out till 2000. All info you are giving still points to battery/cable problems anyway regardless of model year.

Same body style...
Figured it wouldn`t have made a difference. I`m gonna head outside in a bit to check over everything, I`ll report back with what I find.

Alright. Went to take the battery cable off, and I couldn`t even loosen it up:mad:  My 8mm wrenched rounded it out, and my only pair of vise grips, needle nose, chewed it up:mad:

It does, however have the dual cables on the pos. post like you guys said.

It`s just weird, the first two times it stalled, everything went out, but the third time, the truck just stalled.  '

I either need to find some better vice grips, or go buy some.

You might need new cables if its that bad...

As far as the differences in stallings, mine would do really weird things like the radio would cut out for a second...

Alright. My buddys dad is coming by tomorrow to pick up some of grandpas Shopsmith stuff, so when he does, I`ll use one of his vice grips.

Probably the bolt is frozen in the battery, and will strip out the lug in the battery when it finally comes "out". You'll need a new battery probably, along with a new bolt.

You guys nailed it!

There was a bunch of corrosion in there...off to the auto parts store to get a new bolt, and a wire brush.

Thanks again!
