Standard vs Auto

when ever i drive an auto I always go for the "ghost pedal"

I used to drive an international service truck for a living. I would always try to push the clutch in when starting my DD for the ride home.

my woods truck has an actual ghost pedal. I swapped a stick cab on. left the pedal cause its hooked to a clutch safety switch and am too lazy to rewire it. plus people think I am really smooth at shifting since I have a floor shifter too.:D

I say auto.

I drove my first NV4500 the other day, and there is no way I won't be swapping it into my truck. The gearing is beautiful compared to the SM465, and talk about crisp, clean shift gates!

I'm quite excited :D

Chevy 305 must be the only other driver in MA besides me who still uses the directionals!..he's right, the drivers here DO suck, probably the worst on the east coast.. --my middle finger gets quite a workout daily around here..people suck, have no common courtesy and dont care if they run you right off the road..it is especially bad now, since its "the holidays",and all the soccer moms are flocking to the Wal-Mart nearby,at breakneck speeds..average about 5 wrecks a day at the entrance to the Wal-Mart parking lot..:doah:

I prefer an automatic in my 4x4's--I've had a few SM465's--nice rugged tranny, but the gearing sucks --first gear is for crawling only, too low in second gear, and third gear is way too high ,the motor bogs when you upshift--4th felt like an overdrive in my K5..maybe if I hadn't had 3.08 axles I'd have liked it better..but I got tired of doing clutches once a year (or more, couldnt buy a good clutch it seemed, all failed rapidly, and I didn't ride them or abuse them)..

I dont think the newer automatics hold up very good either--not just GM,every manufacturer seems to be unable to make an overdrive automatic that lasts over 100,000 miles--ever since they went to "computer controlled" shifting and pack trannies full of failure prone wires and solenoids, they have all been troublesome and fail easily in my experience..we need a REAL heavy duty tranny, like an Alison or something, that has overdrive and NO computer controls..

As far as GM electronic trannys not holding up, my mom's boy friend is a contractor with a 2000 Chevy 2500 with close to 225K miles on it and the tranny shifts really smoothly still. He also tows his boat and camper with it since he bought it new. He also has started plowing with it too. I believe its a 4L80E? :dunno:

I like how I know the off road trails by me that lead to the back of my local WalFart because from Black Friday to about January 1st there is about a 1 mile back up around there. And this is on a busy street with exit 18 of 495 100 yard down the street. Usually its faster to go by the street but durring the holidays off road is how I get to WalFart.

When I bought my truck it had 3.08s and my current 35"s in it. The thing was a complete dog no matter what gear you were in. In 4th gear with the pedal to the floor, the truck just pretty much held the rpm. After going to 4.10s, there was so much more power available. It felt like I added like 100hp. With propper gearing the 465 is perfectly fine. You just need to keep in mind that the gears are spaced farther apart and you have to get to a higher rpm when upshifting.

I agree about the 4l80 e

I beat the snot out of mine, the only confirmed damage was a t-case and a coast gear in the torque converter

that includes multiple n-drops back in the day and even a accidental drop in reverse at high way speed:rolleyes: :doah: ahh memories..
