picked up a new project to build my new mud racer. it's gonna get a 4.3 v-6 and 33" tires to compete in that class at our local mud bog races. i already have a decent truck for all the other v-8 classes, so i wanted to build something to compete with the jeeps.
we need it to be light weight, since it will be down on power. 1/2 tons, and lots of sawzall time on anything and everything that can be taken off.
haven't decided if were gonna go with an automatic or manual trans yet. i have both setups ready to go. automatic with a full manual reverse valve body would be the best, but being low on power the manual may win out, for now.

to start off, we just picked it up last nite. the kid used it for a woods beater, and did lots of booty fab for it. it's been hard trying to locate a decent frame and cab to start with. wanted a shortbed for sure, but we could have cut down a long bed, but couldn't find a good one. got a half blowed 305, started roll cage. we got the matching painted front clip and hood, lots of extra parts. has a 4 speed and 208 (i think). actual hockey puck body lift, big rear blocks, stock front springs with extra plies, no steering correction.

so here's some pure booty fab which will be undone shortly.

were is this 4.6 motor ?

you mean 4.3 ? ? :wink1:

and what a pile of fine quality toss to gether you picked up. :eek1:

fixed it . yep, 4.3, but i gotta do some research on how to build one up. it's a start, good frame and cab, and good besides. it was cheap enough and i'll get some money back by scrapping the all the extra pipe, and crap bolted on.

Looks like a lot of "fixes" need fixed. What type of 4.3 are you going with, carb, tbi, early vortec?

I see a white Blazer in the first pic:D

i'll appreciate any info on 4.3's . probably carbed. i have a 96 vortec to start with though.

yup, the blazer is still taking up space.

:yikes: you really should do everyone a favor and do back and slap that kid. Like the project though your gonna have alot of fixes to fix like said earlier. I'd try to go vortec myself..

booty fab aside, I wonder what front lift springs they put in this thing. I rarely see a front military wrap spring on a Chevy lift kit.

haha wow... that is some fine engineering on that truck...

i was thinking they were stock front springs with more stock springs added in, but at this point i'm not sure. looks like a headt add-a-aleaf on the bottom though. the shackle is laid back a little bit, and pretty sure they are 3" wide. maybe there out of a ford or something.

got some progress made. didn't find any more booty fab.

then we pushed it into the yard, so i can work on my other '85 bogger. i need it in 6 weeks and have lots to do to it. we'll get back on this in a while.

got my engine for this truck. it's a 1996 vortec 4.3 from a 1 ton 2wd van. i got the 4l80e tranny with it also. i got the whole front end of the van with the computer and wiring harness. i could fire it up if i had a high pressure fuel pump.

my question is, if i was going to keep the fuel injection, and then start modifying the engine, would i be able to leave the computer alone or would it need updated?

if so i think i'll just put a carb on it. ideas?

you would need a tune if you got too far away from stock, although a tune would give you more of a performance curve as well, and then you could also simplify some of the BS gm had in there to begin with and make it a more simplified EFI system.

thank guys. i have a 670 truck avenger carb i could use, if that's not to big?

i would like to keep this truck simple, that why i'd get rid of the electronics, but am i going to loose any performance?

Probably on the big side, but it should work OK I think. I don't think the FI would gain you any power, especially when wide open. I've driven a lot of the newer 4.3 S10's and they don't feel much more powerful than my 200k tbi 4.3 in my '91.

the truck will mostly a bog truck, so i'm not worried about sidehill performance i would gain with the FI.

i just know it will be waaaaaayyy easier to rip the engine out of the van it's in with total disreguard for most wiring.
