I decided to try moving my 81 Chevy van thats been parked in the same spot in my driveway for about 10 years..:doah:..the tires were making nice sunken spots in the asphalt..I wanted to move it after getting tired ot plowing snow around it the past 10 winters..

It had not been started in a LONG time, probably 3 years or more I guess...
I put a battery in it ,and pulled the fuel feed line from the fuel pump to the tank off,and used a gas can and a hose to fuel it,rather than waste money putting gas in the tank, which is by now likely full of rusty crud--I ran it empty long ago and never added any gas to it since..

It took a lot of cranking and half a can of carb cleaner to get it fired up this time...unlike the last, when it fired up as soon as fuel got to the carb..
I tried starting it sunday when it was 60 degrees out and ended up setting the air filter on fire when it spit back thru the carb--luckily I got it to go out before all the wires under the dash caught on fire..

Once I got it to finally start it actually ran pretty nice, quiet,no lifters ticking,nothing...after it warmed up some and the choke came off though,it was evident the darn carb has suffered some from sitting...I may have fouled a few plugs with the carb spray too,but its more likely the carb isnt feeding both barrels equally..spraying the cleaner in it smooths it right out..
I still say nothing with a carb runs right on this ethanol crap gas...

Oh well at least it was not seized tight, and the tranny was able to move it,though it wasn't eager to go into reverse ,it was fine when it was parked, but time takes a toll on cars and trucks that sit..the brakes were rusty and dragged ,but after a few trips up and down the driveway they freed up some..the real brake line popped last time I had tried moving it,but the fronts still worked some..so I could not resist doing a little "line locking" burnout action...it was not able to do much of a smoke show running the way it was though...it bogs like it needs an accelerator pump now when you gas it..

Well, got that moved, and the sun had not set yet--so I decided to try getting my 85 Suburban running and move that too--last time I had it running was september 3rd last year!..with only one battery,my hopes weren't too high that it'd start, and it has a few dead glow plugs ,so being 35 degrees out,I didn't expect it to start really..(the fuel in it is 4 years old and was a mixture of diesel.kerosene and god knows what else the previous owner dumped in it-==frankly I'm surprised it runs on it,and rather decent too!..

Well,to my surprise it did almost start, then I actually got it to fire up and run for about 30 seconds, then it stalled when I let off the pedal, and the battery was run down too much to get it to fire up again...so I used my pickup to jump it,and it started up again...
I then let it run a good half hour...moved it around the yard and freed up the brakes, then sat in it with it running awhile, and felt bad that this thing had to sit idle since november of 09 and I never got to register or drive it yet...thing is catching hell from sitting, and where I parked it off the driveway will likely only make it rot faster..its a dam shame to let it sit much longer..

I should scrounge up a used 700r4 for it and put it on the road,my pickup is getting pretty rusted --but the burb needs a lot of other things too like brake lines, probably calipers and wheel cylinders now too,hoses,etc..maybe the master cyl too,one chamber has been empty and is rusty now..

It must be nice to live in the desert where you can just let things sit and they stay pretty much the same ,until you get the money and parts to fix a vehicle up..here your boned, even in a garage things still can rust up here..

It's good to get out and get the fleet running/moving. Letting them sit does kill them faster for sure...cars hate to sit.

My '83 pick-up has suffered from sitting, and now needs a few things and to be driven regularly again. It's stored at a buddy's farm right now.

My Blazer has been sitting for over a year now in the garage. Russ came by and tried to help me find a "key off" draw...and I haven't done a single thing to it since. :doah: At least it's indoors.

Sad part about my van is just a year before I stopped driving it,I had put in a 307 V8 from a 73 Malibu after tiring of it being sluggish with an original straight 6 250 with the integral head..(and ended up finding out the 307 was in fact less HP and isn't a hell of a lot better really--especially after I put a used diff with 2:73 gears, after the original 3:08 one wiped the diff case out)..gas mileage is great on flat highways, not so good on hilly terrain,,neither is the acceleration...my 6.2 would beat it in a drag race!..:doah:
I had also put in a new timing chain & gears, all new hoses, brake hoses, calipers and wheel cylinders..then parked it,and all the brake parts are now likely junk..the body is getting pretty bad in spots now,but basically cosmetic, the important things like the shackles and suspension are still intact..I had patched up the door bottoms and wheel arches around 1997,now other places have holes and bubbly rust..I also put floors in it in 2002,even though it only had a few small rot spots,I laid down a whole 15 gauge patch and did the tail pan under the rear doors too..

I stopped driving it because I had bought the 83 GMC to plow with and since the van was not an ideal winter beater,I decided to swap the plates off it onto the truck--and never did put them back on it,I had other vehicles I got and sold in the meantime, and couldn't afford to keep all of them insured and registered..

The 90's were a good time--you could still buy a vehicle that was maybe 10 years old or less in decent shape for 500 bucks if you looked around..I got the van in 1990,for 500,the owner said the tranny was NG--it had 120K on it and was practically rust free and like new inside still...it ended up only needing a govenor gear,it wouldn't upshift out of first gear...after putting a used one in it I put 46K on it between 1990 and 2003 ,drove it to TN and all over the northeast with not one "stranding"!...its the one vehicle I have owned so long too,24 years now!..I keep a lot of my vehicles till they either rot away or I just tire of owning them--had my 72 K5 for 9 years ,and my 82 gmc is going on 11 years already...time flies, but it sure does kill a vehicle by letting it sit..

My pickup just barely fits in my garage with the blade on it,and you have to crawl sideways yo get out of it once its in there, and over the plow,to get out..wish it was either twice as big or empty, then one more vehicle could be stashed in it..if I had some of those car casters I could park two sideways and still fit my truck in,if I got rid of everything else in there--but I'd need another garage to put that in!..

The old man's 1976 C65 has ran on nothing but ethanol for over twenty years and has no problems.....

Do you suppose you could sell off the burb, van, and pickup, and have enough money to buy something in better shape?

I'm sure he'll chime in with a huge list as to why he can't do this and woe is he and the whole world is fighting against him and its not his fault.

If you don't like reading his posts. Don't.

No need to be a douche nozzle.

Merry Christmas.

Whatcha doing on the 30th?

I should stop in and finish that job up already :doah:

Workin...:doah:

I'm hoping to get caught without my seatbelt, or speeding, or something similar. Then I'd get three days off. Doesn't seem to be another way for me to get time off. I did get the 25th off, and New Years day, but it just means I have double the work the day after. Luckily I get to work this Saturday too...

I know the feeling my cucv has been sitting at hippies shop since july, I think sunday it gets fixed and just needs to go to the dmv and then its back on the road.
