I went to the local speed shop and had them order me bolts for one of the small GM starters. These are what he gave me, do they seem to short? I just put them in to check length, they`re not necessarily in the right direction....

Yes they do seem short, especially if you need to shim the starter. There is nothing special about the bolts. You can get them at a neighborhood hardware store.

Actually the correct bolts will have the knurling on the end by the head. You should be able to get them from Napa/Advance/Autozone, look in the "Help" section. I' had hardware store ones backout on me before.

ditto

they are in the help section

Actually, starter bolts are special as in the knurling that was already mentioned. The bolts actually center the starter up and keep it bolted up tight.

Got the ones in the help section...look a little too long..better than too short, I suppose...How much thread should there to go in the block, basically what I`m asking is, is there a safe amount (length) of threads that should go in the block, where I won`t have to worry about the bolts getting ripped out and the holes stripped...

Keep in mind that the starter holes in the block aren't threaded to the surface of the block so there is a shoulder portion of bolt that protrudes into the block before you reach the threads.

thats what i was wondering. it looks like there`s a good 1" of the bolt sticking out of the starter.

Ben I just got to say your doin a fine job and really putting the effort in the right places to do the job right:waytogo:

thanks man. :wink1: just using info I`ve gathered, mostly from here, to insure that nothing will go wrong when I finally fire this focker up :wink1:

seems too short by a lil bit.you should have room for lock washers also.should be about an inch past the starter

You do not want lock washers on starter bolts. Starter bolts have a special knurl pattern that needs to be located in a specific place to center the starter and using a lock washer would move the location. Starters don't just fall off of an engine and GM NEVER used a lock washer on them.

i always put em on there.i guess ive been doing it wrong.i thought they needed to be on there.sorry for the misinformation.it should still have close to an inch out the back side of the starter to thread to the block.

That is perfect. You see the knurl pattern on the bolt, that's what centers the starter up along with the other knurl pattern on the upper end of the bolt.
