Starter Drain Plug

I believe you spray this in the starter while jumping the solenoid with a wrench.

One of my late friends had his class ring get caught between the positive battery terminal, the wrench he was using to loosen it,and ground..it turned orange in about 4 seconds!..:yikes:--was one of the most gruesome things I ever saw,the wound took a year to heal and left permanent scars..

I know an older guy,who was a customer at one parts store I worked in, who drilled and tapped the starter end plate where the bushing is,so he could put a grease fitting in it and pump a little grease in there every year or so..he swore it made the starter turn faster and made the bushing last longer..

One day he took the car to Jiffy Lube and the grease monkey saw the fitting while greasing the front end parts, and pumped enough grease into the starter to make it refuse to crank over when he went to back it out of the bay..brushes couldn't make contact with the armature!..

I was the guy who almost sold him a new starter--when I went to put the "core" in the box ,a blob of grease came out of the drive end of the starter..I took the end plate off and wiped out a handful of grease, then sprayed it with brake cleaner..it worked perfectly again!..

Its always a pain bench pressing the starter up with one hand and trying to get the bolts in with the other. These starters are heavy.

Yeah, try bench pressing a Delco 27MT direct drive diesel starter for a 6.2 while lying on your back about 4 times, and hold it up there long enough to get a bolt started..let it drop and it weights enough to mash a finger or fracture your skull!..
I thought putting a starter on a gas engine sucked!..those weigh twice as much at least..and I've had to R&R mine 3 times before I got hold of a gear reduction starter off a 6.5..much lighter, but still heavier than the gas versions..

Try bench pressing a 42mt in a big rig in tight spot between the frame and the engine.
The only thing is when you finally get to the spot you stick it in the hole and then you can put the 3 bolts on while twisting and lifting the starter to align it

No thanks,I used to sell starters for big rigs as well as cars & pickups,I had a hard time just getting one off the shelf and to the parts counter without getting a hernia !.
I can imagine installing one must suck big time..you need a cherry picker to hold it up..I hated getting 4D batteries off the shelf and to the counter too,it was a days work just trying to do that once..

I've thought for a long time about going with a high torque light weight starter. But the start I have works good so why change it is my thoughts.

I got a mini starter I will be putting on my suburban as soon as I have time.
It's so light I am worried but it's for a 454 so it should be fine for a 350

For the starter fluid easiest way is to remove the solenoid, refill it with fluid, then reinstall it back onto the starter. Should last about 6 months with regular driving......

Yall would love the starters on CAT 3516's and Detroit 16V92's. When I was a mechanic in the oilfield one of our rigs went through 4 starters on a mud pump engine in about 2 months before I started. Got sent out to the rig to replace another one and have the roughneck fire it up after I swapped it out. Turns out, he was using about 1/2 a can of ether to start the damn thing in the middle of the summer (spray it in before cranking).

Very funny...:surepal:..
I'm talking group 4D "big rig" batteries..
The one in this link says 97 lbs,I'm wondering if that is "dry"..ones I had to lug felt more like 125 lbs each..(almost as much as I weighed at the time!)..Group Size 4D Battery

Wow these are monsters, bigger than the ones in my big rig.
Twice the price too

The 8D’s are even bigger. Got to play with those on some heavy equipment I used to work on.

Yeah,we sold 8D's too,we had to use a pallet jack to roll those out to the loading dock,we bent the hand truck's lift plate trying to move them with it and it was too short to pick the battery up,it wanted to flip them over instead!..

A friend who's parents ran a drive in movie theater used to have an 8D battery in a radio flyer wagon with jumper cables made of welding cable,to jump start cars with dead batteries after the movies ended..he hated that part of the job!..dragging it 500 feet all around the parking lot sucked..he said you could jump a lot of cars before it needed recharging..

His father said he'd have put it in the bed of their old Dodge Power Wagon they used as a "lot truck",but he and two friends threw their backs out trying to lift it into the bed,so they went with the wagon instead..they put pneumatic wheelbarrow tires on the wagon to handle the weight and roll easier..
