which, in your opinion is the best? wrap or metal. did a search and didn't find any clear answers.

I used the aluminum one and still got heat soak issues. I put in a remote solenoid and it went away. You might consider a Ford solenoid first. Cheaper than a heat shield, and dependable.

I prefer the metal ones over the wrap. If the wrap gets wet it will hold the moisture and cause premature rust. If you're having problems with hot starts...check the cables and connections. Old cables will have more resistance when warm.

I'm not a big fan of the "Ford solenoid" on GM starters. You can still get heat soak with the Ford solenoid. Most of the time when people do the solenoid swap...they replace the cables and clean the connections, which is probably the only thing that need to be done.

If heat soak is a mojor problem, I'd upgrade to a mini starter. I've got a gear reduction mini starter on each of my Camaros. They spin the motors over like the plugs are out. Why downgrade by putting Ford parts on your rig? :haha:

I tend to agree with all you've said, especially furd parts on my bowtie:crazy:. I don't know when the last time my cables were replaced and thinking a heat shield and new cables wouldn't hurt.

Why not take the heat shield and starter off the last of the old style small block Vortecs . The 2001 Van we have at work has nice snap on heat shield . I just think the solenoid is smaller diameter than what older starters had .

It will physically fit and function on any older ( with correct tooth count flexplate/flywheel ) small block too .
