OK. so my K5 made a terrible grinding noise when I went to start it the other day and I come to find out that it is my starter. I take, is it the flywheel, cover off and look at the starter and the little half-dome looking piece on the starter that partially covers the gears nearly falls on my head so problem found.

My question is how the hell do I tell if I need to get a starter that is a 153 or 168 tooth model. Just going to get the OEM replacement bucause that is what I assume is on there. The only info I could see off the flywheel is is a little stamp that says "35". No other indicators as to the tooth count. My current starter has 9 teeth on the gear. With enough muscle I can spin the flywheel with my two hands to see the other half for tooth count info but if I do this will I fock up the timing of the engine? I know, noob question but will it? My motor is a 400sbc with a th350 tranny. What is everyones best guess as to the tooth count on the flywheel since it is not marked. The motor is out of a '79 chevy truck from what the PO told me. If I guess and get the 168 count starter, which I'm leaning towards, how will I know it is the correct one? Will it make more bad noises if it is the wrong tooth count? Any help would be great. Thanks fellas.

#1 if you are having problems with busting the nose cone on the starter check your timing (advanced too much and voids starter warrenty)

#2 turning the flexplate will not do anything to the timing

can't help with the tooth count

mark 1, rotate & count em..or mark each 1 as you count, so not losin count or place,,count em twice so you double checkin yourself
