starter power

Ok, we are going to have to take this in stages because we don't know what damage has occurred.
There should be 4 wires going to the starter solenoid.
The big battery cable, which hooks to the big terminal, plus two red wires that hook to the same terminal.
Plus a purple wire that hooks to the S terminal.

First, unhook a wire from the battery. Take loose any wire hooked to the S terminal, and make sure it can't short out.
Then hook the battery wire and the two red wires to the one big terminal. Make sure the truck is out of gear, and touch the battery cable back to the battery. Don't have your head close. If it sparks, it could cause the battery to blow.

If the starter does not start cranking, and you get no big sparks, then hook up the cable temporally and see if you have lights and stuff inside.

If not, then you have probably blown one of the fusible links. Which are the red wires.

If so, they will have to be replaced with the correct wire, and you are not going to find it tonight probably.
If you have lights, disconnect the battery again, and find the one purple wire. Hook it to the S terminal, and then carefully try the battery again.
If it does not start cranking, hook up the battery and try to crank it.

Let us know what happens.

Actually, down at the starter, they are black. At least for a couple inches before they go into that plastic block and then red or pink after that.

I can't remember, maybe 3 of them. I just replaced them all at the same time. Fusible link wire can be found at just about any parts store.

Well, as it turns out I'm accepting that it was God allowing it to happen when it did...at home. I went back out yesterday morning to work on it. Mind you when I left it the night before it wasn't working. My father-in-law told me to turn on the lights to see if I had any power. He's old so I decided to humor him. Because I knew better, it wasn't working. Well, I had lights. HONK!! And a horn! And then it cranked up.:confused::confused: Don't get me wrong, I was ecstatic but I don't like being confused.:dunno: Anyway, I sanded all connections in case that was it and I did a poor job checking the day before.
I'm just thankful it didn't happen when I had my kids with me miles from home. Thanks for all your replies and even though i didn't have to replace any fusible links I now know I have some, where they are and how I would replace them should the need arise. I also went ahead and welded in a new base for my battery tray. It was in serious need of repair.
